Assuming the lock is broken can you just remove the lock like on B/W?

I own a TFTC but never went into the backbox yet. Guess I will have to try tonight.

You are right...I have been lucky. I have yet to see battery damage on any pin I have owned. My Genie came with its original board and 30yr old battery attached with zero damage.
