Cool thanks. I couldn’t go this year
because of my grand daughter being in the hospital but everyone seems to be having so much fun I want to go next year.

I’m honestly surprised at this comparison. I’ve only been to two pinball shows. Expo 2021 and TPF ‘22 and expo didn’t come close in my opinion.
The “free play” area at expo was kind of garbage. There’s a reason nearly no one was over there once the vendor area opened up.
The only thing better about Expo was the Stern booth. They had a great variety and at TPF it was really just Mando, Zilla and Rush.
The biggest complaint I heard was the lack of most modern Sterns.
All the local games brought it were significantly better. More rare games, more spooky (compared to none) pinball bros/cointaker was great at TPF, better MM P3 presence, etc.
Food at expo was rough too. I would have preferred some food trucks.
The only improvements to TPF would be more square footage as it was a little crammed and a more diverse Stern set up.

    Quoted from callaway15:

There was not a good selection/plentiful selection of recent year games. Chicago Pinball Expo puts this to shame -- minus some of the fluff decorations at this one, unfortunately.
Beyond that, an improvement for the future, would be having more hand sanitizers outside of the game hall. It seemed you had to search all over for something, to feel alright about touching food just outside of the game hall.

    Hi!

If you start a four player game by yourself, you are an asshole.

If you finish a one player game and immediately start another game with people waiting, you are a huge asshole.

    True to this, but…
Should multi player games be encourage if people are waiting behind you or should the person play 3balls and then go back to the end of the line?
I’ve never figured out this pinball etiquette w/single player to four player (strangers or friends) and have always tried to be accommodating. Does anyone still put dollar bills in the coin return slot anymore to get a quiet tournament going? What do you think?

If I’m by myself, and there’s someone behind me, I’ll ask if they want to join. Otherwise, I’ll play my 3-ball game and that’s it.

I saw a few mini-tourneys with dollar bills, but I think it was groups of friends vs impromptu tourneys with strangers.

Most everyone here has been great, but as with all hobbies, there are a few folks who are a bit… odd.

Odd.. The politically correct word for 'inconsiderate'. If everyone was odd it would make for a pretty lousy show/world in general lol.

    Quoted from PaulCoff:

I sure liked being invited to play a game by the folks in front of me. I got to meet some fun folks and I got to play sooner. For the folks behind me, it is the same amount of waiting time. If you are three games back, you are three games back regardless of if it is three one player games or one three player game.

I saw this happen a lot but I think it was more due to ignorance vs intentional.

The best approach is to try and educate the person on how to start a game and explain pinball show etiquette about looking behind you before you start another game or asking others to join you in multiplayer game. And also do it in a friendly manner as opposed to coming off as a pinball know it all type.

Thats when I flip the switch and go "oopseey" And I get strange looks but I always have a nice sarcastic grin on my face when I do it. One guy this year says "oh I am sorry I didn't see you standing there." I just bit my tongue but I sat there for 20 minutes behind him (3 player game with him and two early 20 somethings) and was recording the game play and cool Godzilla effects all while smelling his unshowered for a few days smell. Try this at your own risk. I look like a defensive lineman at 6'1" 290lbs. I only had to do that once this year.

I thought Weird Al and Heist were both awesome! So much so that I ordered both from my hotel room. The platform is only getting better.

I will say as far as etiquette is concerned, I saw zero people staying in a game when people were waiting.

The worst I saw was a guy starting a two play game and then friends came by and they changed to a 4 player game. I can’t even fault that, it just kind of stunk because it was on EHOH and those ball times were long, as was the line.

There were a lot of folks playing 2-3 player games by themselves at Expo last year which honestly impressed me that anyone thought that was okay with a line waiting.

    Quoted from PinMonk:

So how was Weird Al? Fun? Boring? Hard? Easy?

    #124 2 years ago

I'm at the airport about the check my bags (lots of gear as I did the photography for the TWIPY Awards) and I'm exhausted. It was really nice to be back at TPF and hanging out with everyone again. Definitely a lower key show this year, but that was totally ok. I got to play a lot of games for the first time and that's always a big win, but more than anything catching up in person was the best part.

I'm already looking forward to next year and to a continued return to more normal times in the hobby.

    #125 2 years ago

Thank you to Simon Phoenix for bringing his personal Demo Man in from San Angeles. Played really well.

    Quoted from PinMonk:

So how was Weird Al? Fun? Boring? Hard? Easy?

Weird Al was very interesting. The music is a big part of it, but that was certainly hampered by all the sounds at the show. It has some nice shots and really cool gadgets.

I would say it is comparatively hard...but then again...I don't know the rules. Lol!

I waited in line for an hour, and I saw dozens of people play over the weekend. The highest score I heard of or saw was 2.2 million. I played 2 games and both were in the 1.8 million range.

It is a truly unique theme and one that I would have never expected to see in pinball. Those are GREAT things.

    #127 2 years ago
    Quoted from gonzo73:

By 2019 the show was Amazing as always, but way overcrowded, TPF seriously needs to look at a larger Venue.

Be careful what you wish for. MGC used to be at a sprawling, undersized hotel. After years of "overcrowding" it finally moved to a giant, soulless concrete bunker of a convention center. Instantly I realized that critical mass was key to its vibe all along. Also: carpet.

Expo made a similar downgrade recently, moving from a hotel with convention space, to a hangar-like convention center with a hotel attached. Big difference.

    #128 2 years ago

And it’s still crowded but it’s bigger

    #129 2 years ago

The industry and the pinball community is just bigger now than it has been for some time. Most of these shows are going to experience extra crowding until venues get bigger. The spaces from 10 years ago or longer were adequate for the smaller crowds.

For me, CAX is the only one that feels too tightly packed for comfort, but it's still fun.

    #130 2 years ago

Just FYI for whomever makes the next 2.0 software kits to display at a show. The game chosen needs to be in good working order and positioned properly on the floor to showcase the product. Volume should be at a suitable level as well.

If you loved that, you'll die over the "mirror image" playfield the owner made, so it is a mirror'd replica of the stock pf. THAT had to be a fricking massive undertaking.

I was slightly disappointed and I really wanted to love it. It wasn’t exactly the titles fault as the P3 itself was awkward. I’m sure over time you will get used to it but my own personal impression of it was just average at best. It did however offer quite a lot of modes and cool music(Weird Al). I guess what didn’t happen after playing it was asking myself what can I sell to buy this

Thanks for the impressions. Yours is my general problem with the Multimorphic titles I've played before. Was wondering if Weird Al and neat design in the upper part could overcome it.

    #139 2 years ago

Weird Al was cool from what I saw. I hadn't played Heist yet though and that one pulled me in, especially with the short line on it. Came back to it several times and the more I learned the more I enjoyed that.

I wish I could get a solid hour with Weird Al. It seems like a blast, but I barely scratched the surface.

SO hard to get a read on it in a noisy show.

I couldn't hear it well, and I only got one rushed play due to long line behind me.
Didn't try again, I'm not patient enough.

Not Weird Al's fault, I have this issue with pins in any show.

When Star Wars dropped I ordered one rather than wait in line to sort-of-play it. And thus began my pinball adventure.

You’re very welcome, unfortunately I played both Weird Al and the P3 platform itself for the first time together so I didn’t have any other P3 experience to compare it to. I played Heist, Lexy Lightspeed and Cannon Lagoon afterwards and unfortunately they didn’t improve my opinion much. I don’t want to knock it too much though, it does have tremendous potential and it looks like it’s headed in the right direction. I’m sure if I had one for an extended amount of time, I would come to like it much more but it’s definitely not a love at first play kind of machine

Insanely deep, complex, unique due to the P3 platform’s video capabilities and the awesome new servo scoop/walls. The cross playfield ramp return really makes the game feel like a “full” machine, and wow there are so many modes. The spiral ramp that goes UP is amazing.

The fuck it was dialed in all weekend lol....I played it Friday evening and it was literally impossible to make the lock shot around the left orbit, or loops from the upper flipper. Led to a very boring, very clunky game. I used to own one. And had to rebuild most of the playfield, so I know what that game can do when it's rocking.

It looked amazing, but at least when I played it...it played like dog shit. Glad to hear it got sorted, as it deserved better than what I got out of it, that's for sure. Those wireforms are bloody sick though and I'm seriously considering now having mine pulled off Godzilla and having them anodized...

Yeah. It was gorgeous, no doubt. But the Supercharger didn’t work. The kickback didn’t work. He put a ton of time and effort into the game, and I genuinely appreciate the work involved. But there were issues, for sure.
