The switch issue could be as simple as a wire broken off a lug to a faulty switch. If you have to replace the switch, remove a couple mounting screws, desolder the wires and replace. $6 or $7 at most.

The pop is normal. If the voltage regulator has been replaced with an ezSBC switching regulator, expect a louder than normal noise. Still normal and won't damage anything.
