Haven't seen it myself, but it looks like an example of decrementing an unsigned storage register past 0, in this case 8-bit "underflow". Maybe the system thought you hit 3 targets? The two's complement of -1 in this case would be 255, and would make sense if you hit the target again to go to 254 (-2); I doubt the designers worried about "negative targets" to hit, but then again the maximum is 5.... Did it last through a power cycle?
