I have U2-U8 plus U"Trekx7" special sounds ROMS (cast special callouts) that I would like to install. If anyone has done this, I (and Jean-Luc) would like to know the procedure. Thanks!

I'd turn the game off. Remove the board and put on a table.

Then remove the ROMs one at a time and get them in so the notch on the end of the ROM is in the same spot as the notch in the line around the socket you plug it into.

Put board back in game. Hook up connectors. And boldly go where you haven't gone before.

( check YouTube for help if necessary on replacing ROMs, same on any board not just pinball, video games too )

Thanks LTG, but I should have been more specific. I know how to change chips. My question should have been "do I need trekx7 (don't know whats on it) because there are 7 on the board with the manual showing U8 as unused. Any changes to MPU? Jean-Luc was worried about losing settings and high score but I assured him he did not have to change his game ROM. Am I correct?
Thanks again!

I you don't change game ROM, you won't lose settings with anything you do on sound board.

Don't know if you need U8 or not, check with who you got the ROMs from.

trekx7 is a game ROM - it goes on the CPU board. It enables you to turn on adjustment 28 for the special speech function. You will lose high scores and settings once you put this in the machine. There is a way to modify it so it won't overwrite high scores and settings but it requires manually editing the ROM and it is an ill-advised procedure.

1) Yes, you have to use the special CPU ROM to use the special speech ROMs
2) You will need to replace the sound ROMs with the ones from the set you got. U2-U8

For your high scores, you record them and enter them as the backup high scores after you put in the new ROM. I guess you can't enter initials though.

I swapped my chips and didn't lose my scores. Not sure why? I got my chips from John Wart. His instructions are below.

"Installation is not difficult; the key is to make sure the new chips are installed with their notches pointed the same direction as the original chips were - the notches determine polarity and if installed backwards, will ruin the chip.

The CPU ROM goes on the CPU board, the sound ROMs go on the sound board.

Installation instructions for the CPU ROM are here:
http://thatpinballplace.com/documents/installing_eproms_wpc.html"

I didn't need to remove the board either. Just make sure the notches are right. My first attempt was backwards and I had to pull and re-insert. Very lucky my chips are ok. Also, after install, everything in the switch matrix column 3 failed test except the borg ship. This caused all of the poppers and guns to fail. After hours of investigation, we determined the CPU had shut the column off as it thought it was broken. Apparently, this is also common on WH2O. All we had to do was set off the optos in the column and they passed the test again.

Hmmm. Excellent everyone! I will notify jean-luc that he has to replace the CPU ROM and that he will indeed lose his scores. This is why he has hesitated doing the swap. I don't care because I don't have grand champ. So, just to confirm, U8 is still not used after the swap?

Hey Smokey, I recently spoke with johnwartjr. As well I notice he commented above. So I know I have to use the CPU/Display chips. But thanks for checking out for me. Still have not changed the roms because I have not built up the mojo to lose my scores haha. But, I will at some point. Just gota man up and face the fact that starting over is not that big of a deal. haha
