Read every post here regarding left cannon issues. Mine is a little different: Power up, left cannon kicker immediately deploys and stays out, cannon proceeds to rotate continually until I manually pop the kicker back in, cannon immediately returns home and all is well. Cannons operate perfectly in game play. I checked the optos and they seem a little dim, but if they work in game play, I would rule optos out.

Its going to be the coil sleeve. They are worn and the plunger sticks. Mine did that as well and once I replaced the sleeves, they the problem went away.

Check the coil bracket in there as well--replace while you are at it.

Thanks! Great advice!

Kinda wondering why the kicker pops out at startup anyway. Part of the startup test sequence?

It is testing the opto when it kicks out... I think. : )

Replaced coil sleeve and adjusted the coil stop--it was a little skewed--there are slots in the stop to center it up--I believe it was binding ever so slightly. The adjustment along with new sleeve fixed what was a mechanical problem. Thanks for the advice and hope this helps others.
