Tech: Space invaders displays all flash 88 - why?

If it's happening on all 4 displays I doubt its bad connectors on all of them.I would guess the 4th bcd line is stuck which would give you an 8.
Try swapping U10 and 11 on the MPU. Also check the bookeeping. If the numbers are scrambled could be a bad 5101 or 6810 chip.
Also whats the deal with the battery on the MPU?
