Hello,

This is my first post on this site. I’ve had my Teacher’s Pet (TP) for about 20 years and bought it refurbished from a shop in PA. It ran fine for about 5 years. For various reasons, my collection (5 machines) went unused for about 15 years, but I now have time to troubleshoot and enjoy them. I need advice for a few nagging issues that I just can’t resolve. I have the schematic. Any help will be most welcome and appreciated:

I have reviewed Clay’s excellent repair guide, Russ Jensen’s articles, other posts on this site, multiple you tube videos and other resources that I have.

TP is set for free play by jumper wires on the credit unit. The coin unit will also start the machine, but is unused.

1) Start up is fine with all score reels zeroing out and the game relay triggering. However, it always adds points (10, 30 or 60) at the end of startup (ball count unaffected and stays at 1). 1 point relay is fine, 10 and 100 point relays are well worn, but appear to be working ok. EOS switches on score reels are ok. No obvious problems with the score motor cams or switches.

2) There are 3 “up target” rollover buttons for the 2 drop targets which should score 10 points when triggered, but score 50 or occasionally 60 points. They reset the drop targets appropriately.

I had issues with the 500 point relay sticking and the “T” and “E” eject holes not triggering their relays (but appropriately scoring 50 points) which I was able to correct.

I have visually inspected the switches and relays, cleaned many switches with a fine flexstone file. Lock relay is very rough looking, but working ok.

My thanks in advance.

Pat

Welcome!

When points are added at the end of startup, is the score motor still running (completing its last revolution)?

Double-check the zero switches on the 10 point reel. All three switches should be open at the zero position.

You can see a nice diagram of the switches here (plus it is awesome to look through those old parts manuals!):

If you have a scan of the schematic please submit to ipdb.org and post here.

Thanks for the prompt reply. I just checked and all 3 switches are open at the zero position. I cleaned them and retested startup. It scores 10 points after normal startup corresponding with the last tooth on the score motor impulse cam prior to the end of reset. I have a paper schematic, but no scanned copy (sorry). I can try photo and post if you need a specific part.

A high resolution photo would be helpful.

Do you ever get phantom scoring during play, which might indicate a too-close gapped scoring switch?

Otherwise you may have to systematically block switches that score 10 points to find the culprit.

#5 3 years ago

Can’t recall any phantom scoring during play. Only other 10 point scoring other than the three roll over buttons is the pop bumpers, but I checked them. I have a feeling it may be a 50 point award that’s triggering since I get higher scores on reset (30, 50, 60 at times) depending on how many teeth on the impulse reels are left when the malfunctions, but it there is no stand alone 50 point relay like there is a 500 point relay. As for 50 point awards, there’s the 4 eject holes and the drop targets is their native state.

I hope the schematic pics are acceptable (and upload in proper sequence). I can zoom in on any section you may find useful.

Thanks again.

I’m not sure if this helps, but with any score on the score reels when I start a new game, the impulse wheel makes 3 cycles (540 degrees) to stops at a rest point, and the faulty points score on the 3rd set of 5 teeth. If I manually zero out the score, a new game will not start from the credit button, but it will from the coin switch and the impulse wheel only makes one cycle (180 degrees) and no faulty points score.

Oops, missing section between images 3 and 4! Sorry.

There are two paths into the 10s Score Reel coil. One is through a switch on the 10 point relay which is used during game play and the other is through a switch on the Score Reset Relay which is used during reset. A first step might be to divide the problem in half and eliminate one of these as a suspect. If you block both switches with a piece of paper the 10s reel should fail to reset at all. If you block just the 10 point relay switch and the problem persists that would implicate the Score Reset Relay path.

The Score Reset Relay pulses 5 times per 180 degree turn of the Score Motor until the score reels have reset. Watch that relay as the game resets. Does it pulse when you get the extra points? Does the 10 point relay pulse at all during reset?

Thanks Mark. I blocked the 10s switch on the 10 point relay and still got phantom scoring, ie score reel inactive but I can hear 10 point bell ringing so I assume relay is triggering (I’m by myself so I can’t physically see it). I blocked the 10s switch on the score reset relay and score motor does not come to rest on restart (as expected since reels won’t reset to 0), but if I manually reset the 10s reel to 0 and leave scores on the other 3 reels, when I restart the reels reset and I get phantom scoring of 30 or 40 points.

The score reset relay does not pulse when the extra point or points are registered, but the 10 point relay does ( I found a way to trip the replay switch from behind the machine).

Quoted from pazazz05:

The score reset relay does not pulse when the extra point or points are registered, but the 10 point relay does.

Since you get a variable number of points scored it may be that pulses from one of the impulse switches on the Score Motor (in the red boxes) are getting through to the 10 point relay when they shouldn't.

If one of the normally open switches in the paths involving the Score Motor Impulse switches is gapped too close it may allow stray pulses to get through. Have a close look at these paths and the switches on the Drop Target relay and the Eject relay in particular.

I tried everything you suggested, but to no avail. Any thoughts as to my second issue, i.e. the up target roll over buttons all scoring 50 points (or 60 occasionally) instead of 10, and could that tie into the phantom scoring at restart.

Thanks again.

#12 3 years ago

Tried what exactly? Did you block the two Score Motor Impulse switches to see if that stops the extra points?

When the roll over buttons score more than 10 points can you confirm that the Score Motor turns? I don't think it should for 10 points.

#13 3 years ago

Mark, sorry but I didn’t know you wanted me to block impulse switches, just check the gaps. I checked gaps on impulse switches, drop target relay and eject relay and all were well gapped. I went back and blocked switches C (top) and B (middle) on impulse cam. Switch C has no effect, but when I blocked switch B no phantom scoring AND the up target buttons score an appropriate 10 points! Score motor does rotate when roll over switch is engaged.

Attached are pics of impulse switches in resting (open) state, closed state, and paper block on switch B

Next step?

Check switches on the drop target relay (blue-red wire).

#15 3 years ago

Got it! Broken solder joint on one of the switches on the drop target relay. It was buried back behind the switches and very hard to see. Both issues (phantom scoring and roll over relay over scoring) are corrected with the jumper and no paper blocking the B impulse switch. Tomorrow I will try to re-solder (that will be difficult), put the machine back together and give it a run through (too tired for that tonight. I can’t thank you enough!
