It sounds like you have the cable on backwards. Double check that on both ends of the cable, the red stripe goes to pin 1.

No, it wont hurt. Pin 1 should be clearly labeled on the boards though.

Adjustment failure means that at some point you pulled the batteries out with the machine off. It will say that until you go in to the menues for the first time.
