Basically, any game with translucent pop covers. I haven't experimented with solid pops (like the originals from high speed) but I don't think they'd look that great. They just aren't made to work as well in that application.

My OOOOOOONLY real wish, well actually two of them: independent brightness controls for top/bottom and only one shade of white (looks like cool white to me) on the bottom. Imo it kind of clashes with otherwise warm or sunlight white GI. For example:

Where is the Santa kick out suppose to kick out the ball to? Mine is inconsistent and will mostly put it to right flipper but 1/8 times right down the middle. Is it suppose to kick it out to top left of Marilyn drop targets?

Mine kicks it out in the upper part of the playfield, almost always (maybe even always) on that rubber behind the center drops. It usually re-engages the pops from there.

Yeah it’s in good shape for it’s age. I have a new one on the way for my restoration but this one could probably be spray painted white, get a new decal and look pretty nice.

I busted a couple of the mounting holes on mine when it hit the beam in my basement (didn't realize it was too tall to move past when I started pulling the machine forward on the table cart). I'm going to have to just bite the bullet and spend the $100 for a new one at some point.

I figure I'll do it when I'm willing to try touching up/repainting the front of the cab. The rest of my cab is CHERRY but the front...eh. I need to make the front look nice, replace the topper, pull mylar (for whatever reason this makes me super nervous), try to clean up discoloration--assuming that's even possible--and then touch up/clear. Probably jet black powdercoat if I'm going that far, too, I guess. Right now I'm just playing it, but someday I'd like to finish it 'right'.

Maybe hardtop? The black powdercoat looks great, highly recommend!

I definitely have no qualms against hardtops (I did one on my High Speed, I bought a Space Shuttle with one, I am having one installed on my Eight Ball Deluxe currently, and I'll probably do one on my Pinbot if I end up keeping it long term) but I dunno, I feel like unless I can't get out the discoloration, hardtopping this playfield would be kind of.....wrong. It's nowhere near bad enough to warrant doing that to it. Again, just my opinion! I think my cab is special *because* it's a survivor that's still (on most aspects--there are a few flaws, of course) in pretty damn nice shape.

I could be completely wrong about buffing out the playfield. I certainly don't know a ton about the restoration process as I'm usually more of a repairer than a restorer.

I received my CPR Taxi backglass last week. Overall it looks good, they did a very nice job on the mirror effects. I think Pinbot looks better on the CPR, his colors are more vibrant. Drac looks about the same to me.

The not so good is that Marilyn and Gorbie are too pale/washed out so they lose some facial detail compared to the original. Santa looks about the same except his raised hand is washed out. The green color of the taxi driver’s camo jacket is also a little off.

The reasons for replacing are that my backglass has some type of separation in the lower part (looks like maybe moisture got between the glass and the art?) and also I got rid of the mirror block on my new lightboard door so I need the mirror on the backglass.

Thought I’d post this on here in case anyone else is thinking of getting one and wanted a comparison. They are sorted original first, CPR second.

My CPR Taxi backglass is so washed out, the famous mole on her face, is almost completely gone.

The hair on the drivers fingers are completely gone. The details are missing thru out my glass. Not sure "if" CPR made 2'nd or 3rds... I bought this glass installed on my game.

#2316 3 years ago

CPR seems to make some really beautiful playfields but from what I gather a lot of the backglasses are just.... not great. I bought my eight ball deluxe glass from shay because it was the only place that had the colors right.

#2317 3 years ago

In some cases like a scratched or peeling backglass it’s probably a big improvement. In my case I’m basically trading the moisture issue for washed out colors. I guess it’s better, but kind of a toss up.

Oh for sure, i agree. With my ebd i was lucky to get a great deal with plastics but I really didn't like the coloring of the CPR glass.

I thought my meteor CPR glass looked fantastic though. Ymmv lol

So after a ton of rewiring and a LOT of troubleshooting I have everything on the playfield working correctly and the sounds are great. (To get the lower pop working I had to replace everything - both transistors and the 7402 IC.) So what's left besides making it pretty?

Cabinet bell - Can't find anything in the book as far as schematics. I ground the transistor and get nothing. The wiring on it looks sketchy at best. Any chance one of you folks have found or made a schematic or at least taken a decent pic so I can get a clue?

Displays - I have no player three and in player one it looks like several digits trying to display in the same place. And players 1,2 and 4 are all missing the 2nd to last number. Any ideas? I wouldn't even know where to start and with this machine anything is possible as well as likely!

Thanks for any help!
Shawn

Just by looking at that picture. Yes it was the yellow wire. Going off memory that wire goes to one of the switch blades to complete the circuit.

Hey guys, picked up a rare one today. Marked “7” 8/19

Basically or is, an XR7 Taxi.

Very little info exists on these but it’s definitely a factory clear coat. The picture of the pops says it all and lack of discoloration between mylar around the inlanes.
The only other one I know of is Chris Buccis, his originally came from expo 88’ and he tore it down and had it restored.

Going to shop it out and enjoy it for now.

Just got a Taxi machine delivered today. I don't know why I like this machine so much, but it has always been one of my favorites. It's in pretty good condition. Was a little dirty when I got it, but it cleaned up real nice. A little damage to some of the paint near the poppers which I fixed as best I could and I touched up a little here and there. There wasn't even a whiff of wax on the machine when opened the glass... but the paint didn't suffer too too much. It's a Lola machine with Marylin back glass and for some reason the translite doesn't quite fit.

On my machine, the left hand airport ramp, the ball seems to shoot from Drac really hard and fast. It hits the end of the rail and bounces back and then falls through the hole. A lot of times the ball drains down the left side.

I don't think that is normal. Sometimes just shooting up the airport ramp can cause it too. But only on the left. The right hand side the ball also hits the end of the rail hard and it bounces back a bit, but I haven't had it drain the ball yet.

Looks like it is the top part only though. So you would still need the lower part that it screws in to.

Just finished a full playfield restoration of my taxi and got everything back together and running. Everything is working fine but I have one thing that I am not sure is a switch issue or just the program.

When the ball rolls over the right inlane "Bonus w/l" all of the lights go out (including GIs) for 1/2 sec and then flash on dramatically with a call out that has Gorby saying "Watchout". I don't remember this from before and the left inlane doesn't do it. Is this a feature or a bug? In a dark room you literally can't see the ball when it happens and the ball is on top of the flipper so it is hard to play, that seems like something I would remember. I am wondering if this isn't a switch matrix issues triggering something else but I can't seem to replicate another switch making this same light display and call out. When you get a ball lock it does something similar but not quite the same.

#2337 3 years ago

Ha ha, just figured it out. I had swapped the right outlane and inlane. That was the outlane "lost ball" sequence. Simple fix. Here are some pics if anyone is interested.

Before:

I had a lot of wear around the pops and big color difference on the "road" across the playfield. Plus damage to a lot of inserts.

Looks great! That's a hard top install? Roughly how many hours did you put into the whole project from disassembly, preparation, install, and rebuild of the playfield?

Yeah the hard tops are super nice. The hardest part is the sanding because it makes a mess but I’ve done a hardtop and play field swap and I’d say the hardtop overall is quicker and takes less work than a play field swap

Thanks MoSeS, no it is not a hardtop. It is a full repaint, new inserts, decals and clearcoat.

How many hours...maybe 100? I sort of dragged it out. Also I had a weird issue with my clearcoat and decals that kept wrinkling so I had to sand and redecal a couple of times. It took a while to depopulate but I was very careful with labeling and it went back together quick. It is my second full restore and this went a lot better than the first.

Very nice! when you say a full repaint and decals what do you mean? I've seen adhesive playfield decals that can be placed to touch up worn areas, but did you paint some areas by hand and place decals in other areas? Also, did you clear coat over the adhesive decals (if I'm correct on the decals thing)?

#2342 3 years ago

Yeah it's a process.

Step 1 - Remove everything from the playfield
Step 2 - Clean
Step 3 - Replace and flatten inserts
Step 4 - Mask and paint areas for touch up
Step 5 - Print and apply decals for text
Step 6 - Clearcoat, sand flat and polish

None of the steps are that hard (except maybe the clear coat) but you just repeat them over and over. Takes a lot of time and patients but not necessarily much artistic talent.

So you start with something like this:

1108201848b (resized).jpg1108201848b (resized).jpg

Take a picture of the text and then paint over with white:
1111201723_HDR (resized).jpg1111201723_HDR (resized).jpg

Then create a decal of the text in photoshop and apply it on top:

1213202010a_HDR (resized).jpg1213202010a_HDR (resized).jpg

To apply the paint you use a clear mask and then cut out the inside with an xacto. I don't have a picture from Taxi but here was my previous:

OriginalOriginal

Masking and PaintMasking and Paint

AfterAfter

I am just an amatuer but there are folks that are much more experienced than me. I just enjoy doing it and learning a new skill.

I want to have my taxi touched up at some point (and factory mylar pulled) but for right now I'm just going to play it as is. I have the artistic ability of a turnip.

I don't really have any artistic ability either. I learned that if I get a small enough brush and magnifier it doesn't really matter. It is more like paint by number.

I didn't have any mylar left on my machine, someone before me pulled it. The problem was that it aged differently and there was a clear line where it used to be.

Yeah, that's a big problem with mine as well. What's under the mylar essentially looks perfect and what isn't...looks stained. I'm not sure there's any way to remedy that besides repainting, which is unfortunate.

How are you pop bumper area? Mine was trashed. I don't know why they didn't mylar back there.

It was gauged to bare wood an 1/8" deep.

I'd say mine are probably about 'average. Not perfect, but not completely destroyed. Lack of mylar certainly does seem odd. My pops are VERY lively.
