Hello Barr993...

Your Taxi looks awesome!

I too took my "Decals" to Home Depot to color match in oil base paint. It matched well, not exact, but happy with results (see picts above #2021)

I have another Taxi to do next. I have purchased the RadCals for this one. I may just use the same color match above, or have them use RadCals for custom mix.

Note: I see your Taxi has slide / skids on the back, like on newer games. Neither of my Taxi's have them. Were they stock on yours or did you make them?

Kerry

1 qt of each should be good. I used 2 of each but that was due to my issues.

Btw this was with the $10 Harbor Freight gun that has a 1.4 tip.

Quoted from Barr993:

I just finished my Taxi paint and decals and struggled with HVLP and colors along the way so maybe my story will help:
I backed into HVLP due to Vid's cabinet guide thread recommending Kilz oil based primer but I couldn't roll that well so went to HVLP and thinned the primer with naphtha (per Vid) 4 : 1 to get it to flow which worked out well.
For color, started with the Behr 3300 color recomendation in this thread and elsewhere. Took the color code to Home Depot but they couldn't decipher it. Went back with a piece of the new decals to scan and mix. Got home and knew I'd have trouble with spraying because the 3300 was so thick. Thinned out with water to 20% which is twice the recommended amount, still too thick, tried to spray with bad results and it was tacky after days. The excess water was probably affecting the chemical reaction.
Then went to Sherwin Williams for oil based cabinet paint and HVLP recommendation. They had no one with HVLP experience but scanned the decal and mixed the paint which is only available in gloss. Sprayed the cab (again 4 : 1 naphtha), went on good but the color was not right. Apparently the scanner was picking up mostly yellow and not the red which is very fine specs on the decals. Back to the store, scan and mix, color didn't look right in the store so the rep custom mixed another adding more red. It turned out to be a close match and complimentary to decals.
[quoted image][quoted image][quoted image][quoted image]

That does look good but those are just regular decals correct? Is that why you didn't fully paint the sides. Regular decals cover 100%.

#2054 3 years ago

Kerry, sweet paint work! The 1500 and clear is awesome.

This was my 1st Sys 11 and it was beat up on the back due to only having the button glides so I added the WPC style skids to protect it in the future. Poplar wood.

Barr93... are you going to recess the head bolts, before installation of RadCals.

Here's a pict of a Whirlwind done: Sorry I don't know how to insert 2 picts (before / after) by copy/paste...

I did decals. Really only needed to paint a little at the edges for the correct decal trim back but went a little further.

Bellagio is doing Radcals

@Bellagio... are you going to recess the head bolts before your RadCal installation?

I think I'm going too. However, I'm still on the fence bcuz, I kinda like the traditional look. With that said... the traditional look is thrown out the window with gloss / shiny RadCals

Great job with the purple HF gun! I still can’t figure out how they make any profit on that thing ha ha

I was thinking about that too. I will most likely leave the bolts exposed like original.

Cabinet door is finished. New Xpin display, all new lamp and flasher sockets, and relay board replaced with GI-OCD board.

Hello,

Almost ready with this restauration and hardtop installation.
Need your help with 2 problems.

How do you install the large taxi plastic on the right side of the shooter assembly. Mine was fixed on the wood but this is not how it needs to be. Can somebody help me with spacer and screw size please?

Can somebody help me with the large metal posts that hold the 2 ramps. I think mine are mixed up. Ramps are out of position and do not fit perfect. It would be very helpfull I somebody would help me to position all those large metal spacers.
Thanks

Not sure if this will help or not but here is the pic of mine with all of those visible

Edit; for the Taxi Plastic, if it’s a new one, you’re going to need a heat gun to bend it. It’s a bent plastic and curves down towards the shooter lane. The screw closest to the player does go into the wood rail

Toine79 about the taxi plastic, I see your shooter wire form has two tabs, are they both not drilled/tapped? My taxi is screwed to these 2 tabs but I also have a screw hole in the wood rail so I'm not sure what was original.

Were the different mounting arrangements a change in production or a mod?

My as-found tear down:

Toine79... I own 2 Taxi's. The limo is mounted differently on both.

I believe you have an earlier production game where the limo as appox metal 3/4" tabs to mount it (to wood rail) and the other version mounts w/o tabs mounted to metal ball ramp.

In addition to the differences: the blue plastic on yours ("Lites Carry Passengers"), below limo's driver & Santa, has about 7 clear posts. Most Taxi's don't have any of the posts there. On mine one has them, the other does not.

Also, the limo should lay flat, at an angle, not with it twisted as seen on @Jmckune.

Hope this is helpful.

Thanks
Kerry

#2069 3 years ago

Mine only has the 2 screws to the wireform tabs, no tab on the trunk of the Taxi.

The one that's mounted on the ends: does the wireform have tabs to mount the taxi and are they drilled/tapped?

#2072 3 years ago

Our Taxi, serial number 161787, has the plastic mounted to the wireform with 2 screws. This issue with this location is the plastic can catch on the siderail when raising/lowering the playfield and break off the 'taxi sign' on the top of that plastic. The new plastic sets are a little more flexible which could solve the problem. I'm getting ready for a Taxi restoration and am glad to see an alternate method for mounting this plastic. Thanks for posting the picture Kerry.

I have the same issue on mine. And a big scrape mark on the inside of the cab. I just took the plastic off completely for now

Hello,
I see you installed some extra spotlights. Can you post a picture when the spot lights are burning?
Playfield has indeed some dark areas but I'm still in doubt to install spotlight on slings and spotlight on ball through.

It’s up to you but if you are open to using LEDs, the game doesn’t have many dark spots, and that includes if you elect to use the traditional Warm White color. Mine is in cool white which I am partial to, but everyone has their own taste. Here is a picture of mine in a dark room with only lights coming from machines.
04BF1CA5-1B84-4BBE-8B08-C4483D91B566 (resized).jpeg04BF1CA5-1B84-4BBE-8B08-C4483D91B566 (resized).jpeg89641C12-B1A4-4011-99A5-7E39403144B0 (resized).jpeg89641C12-B1A4-4011-99A5-7E39403144B0 (resized).jpeg
Color scheme was cool white for GI,
Red in pops, under spinout, and red inserts
Warm white under all characters,
Green for green inserts,
Cool white under the million and inlanes,
Cool white under the yellow taxis (including jackpot) and C-A-B lanes.

I elected for cool white flashers as it had green originally (yuck) but had I had a stash of regular 89 flash lamps I would have used those.

Toine79 I'll post a pic when I get it fired up. Will be done this weekend if not sooner.

Thanks for the picture.

I have Comet warm white Leds every where and I do like the warm yellow glow on the playfield. Maybe I will place 2 spots and the ball through led kit.

#2080 3 years ago

My first test today and noticed that this little gate stays open.
When I launch the ball in spinout ramp it kicks it out in the joyride hole.
I assume that It needs to be close at launch or am I wrong?

DSC_2275~2 (resized).JPGDSC_2275~2 (resized).JPG
#2081 3 years ago

Yes, normally closed, open for Gorbie and Jackpot shots.

#2082 3 years ago

The spotlights look great but I think the cooler white clashes a lot, at least in that picture. My Evo pop lights are similar, with the cooler white bottom lighting. I think it looks meh with the otherwise warm white 2SMD GI I went with.

*Hopefully you don't take offense to what I just said; your taxi looks good.

#2083 3 years ago

KSUWildcatFan no offense. I only had a cool white trough light strip, so I put cool white in the spots. I may switch them to warm and see how it looks with the cool white trough light. Gotta get a comet order in! lol

#2084 3 years ago
Quoted from Barr993:

OK, where do I start to find the solution?
Need to mention that my spinout switch was not connected. Coukd this be the issue?
Gate opens via the wireform on Garbie?

#2085 3 years ago

Does the coil for the gorbi gate move freely? That gate is normally closed. Is the spring attached correctly?

I'm mad there's no option for warm white with Evo BriteCaps. I think they look a bit stupid in my high speed and taxi, both of which have warm white GI.

But I love the extra light in the pops so it is what it is...

#2087 3 years ago

I'm partial to warm white 2smd's on this era game for all of the playfield GI.

144 (resized).jpg144 (resized).jpg
150 (resized).jpg150 (resized).jpg

The center of the playfield does look a little dark in photos, but it's more of a matter of not setting the exposure correctly on my phone. In person it's not nearly as dark as it looks in the pics.

(I am however going to put incandescent bulbs back in under the 5 characters' inserts.)

Warm white 1smd's in the backbox except I kept incandescent bulbs behind Lola.

Looks fantastic. I also love the 2SMD warm whites. I was going to go with the sunlights which do look really good, but I'm a sucker for warm white on most Sys11 games--games like F-14 being the exception where cool white looks boss IMO.

Here’s another system 11 where I think cool reigns supreme. I can agree that Taxi looks good either way. The blue and lightning theme on this one just screams cool to me though.

Thats how my Taxi looks like.
Need to install my bumper caps and some plastics to finish it.
Still worrying about my ramp in the back with seems to high when I compare it with other pictures in this thread.

That looks pretty well lit to me. I just hesitate piggybacking off the GI to add more lighting. It looks like besides the caps, you still need to put the 3 lamp sockets in. That will also add some light.

Something seems off with the post that goes in between the wood rails on the back of the machine. It looks too tall. Is it all the way screwed down into the table with the nut secured on the end?

#2093 3 years ago

I hate how stupid this camera makes my BriteCaps look in a full shot. They are bright but they always look absolutely blinding in a long shot with other lights. Dumb.

Possible to mark the post on the picture you talk about?

#2095 3 years ago

Never mind in that, I was thinking you had yours on the ramp, it’s for the spinout. Only other thing I can think of is maybe you mixed up these. These are the 3 post I’d look at to make sure they are right. The wireform should continue the decent rather than raise back up take a close look especially at those two on the left and see if they are swapped. I can try to take a close up when I get back home for you. Only thing I can think of is either you mixed up the two on the left or you mixed up the shorter one on the left with the shorter one on the right. I think you have the wrong post in the rear left corner for sure. Your ramp gets too close to the glass

The one in the right is the shortest one of all, I think. That one is correct. The two of the left are maybe mixed up. If possible could you measure it?

#2097 3 years ago
