S-l-o-w-l-y being able to join the Jeep club. Rebuilding a 1945 Willys CJ2A which will likely not be ready until sometime in 2018. They started building CJ2A Jeeps in 1945 with serial number 10001. This is number 10559 so a very early 1945 being the 559th Jeep off the line. They only made 1,800 Willys Jeeps in 1945 and over 71,000 in 1946. This has the column shift 3-on-the-tree which they discontinued early in 1946 in favor of a floor shift. Has the 60hp, L-head, Go-Devil 134cu.in. inline 4 engine. Also has the full floating Dana 27 rear end which they swapped out with a Dana 41 when they eliminated the column shift. Only came in two colors in 1945, green with yellow wheels or tan with dark orange wheels. Not going back to those colors for sure...

Some pictures of the Jeep as we pulled it out of storage, mid tear-down and ground up rebuild of the frame.

Ohhhhhh. Willys that will looks soooo good once your done. Love the willys. I was looking at getting one as a rat rod but have too many projects. Post updates!

I won't spam the group with updates but will post a few as things progress further. This Jeep project has sure cut into my pinball time and funds.

Ok more progress. This time a milestone was reached I thought I'd never see. More than 72 years after it was first built...it lives again! 1945 Willys 'Go-Devil' 134cu.in. (2.2L) inline 4-cylinder. Whopping 60hp!

Getting closer to finishing up the 45. Looking at about mid May to be complete. Ended up painting it with a 2017 Nissan dark blue pearl. Closely resembles the Normandy blue they started using in 1946.

Didn't like how the suspension was set up by the previous owner with springs over axles. Did a lot of work rewelding spring perches, redoing brake lines and driveshafts to get the axles over the springs. It's back down to the original height and it looks much better. I can officially call this project done! Higher and lower pictures included for comparison.

1946? I see it has the recessed front parking lights as does my very early '47

Rare 1945 with column shift. Serial #10559. It's been heavily restored though. I love the look of the old patina on yours.

Here's my '45 Willys CJ2A with column shift. Harley loves to go for rides when I pull this thing out on a nice day.

'47 Willys CJ2A coming along, transfer case & transmission done, just need to bolt them together. Drivelines rebuilt, inspected rear differential & replaced rear pinion seal. Looked good inside, no water or metal chunks, wear pattern fine. I was a little worried about the possibility of the ring gear bolts being loose as is fairly common on these but all was good. STILL waiting on the block from the machine shop... I guess it's no big deal as I still have the brakes, steering, wheel bearings, drive axles, & electrical to rebuild. Will be easier to do front brakes & steering with engine out anyway.

Have you thought about removing the pill and spring in the transfer case shift lever so you can switch to 2WD-low? I was in the JeepFest parade in Toledo last year and wished I could have switched to low gear in 2WD. I've since added locking hubs to the front so I can accomplish the same thing by putting it in 4WD-low and unlocking the front hubs.

My heavily optioned Willys.
It has an optional passenger seat & driver side only heater. Roll bar & seat belts only added at the insistence of my wife.

Mine has less options than yours. No heater, no roll bar and no seat belts. It does have a right side brake light and turn signals though.

Yeah, I added a right side stop/turn light & converted the front parking lights to signal lights. I figured no one would know what my arm out the side was doing....

I did the same! I figured people today would think I'm waving or pointing at something.

Real Jeeps don't have doors.

Or seatbelts, or airbags, or radios, or disc brakes, or power steering, or automatic transmissions...but, in a real Jeep, you sit ON the gas tank!

Replacements. I think that makes it a lot harder because. nothing. fits. properly.

Got a rear locker kit & a Saturn overdrive setup for my '47. Debating getting a front locker as well.....

Let me know how the overdrive install goes. Do you plan on dropping the transmission to get better access to the PTO end? I've thought about an OD kit for my 45 2A but not sure if the mph or rpm gains are worth it. Good luck!

Got the overdrive installed on my '47 CJ2A... still need to do a little more heating & bending on the OD shift lever & transfer case levers, but test drive went fine. 25% reduction makes a HUGE difference... before at 45mph the little L134 was just screaming, now it purrs along at a comfortable level.
Not going to gain much in top speed as it only has 60hp to push it along.

You're making me want to do this now.

#829 11 months ago
Quoted from dasvis:

It's $1000 +-, but worth it.
Even if just because it looks cool with four shift levers.
Installation would be a LOT easier with the tub off. Getting the oddball lock washer & snap ring on the planetary gear is a bitch. I finally bought a little $26 wifi endoscope off of Amazon so I could see up in there to line things up. Worked like a charm.
amazon.com link »

Yeah I should have done it when I removed the PTO and set the tub on. I'd only have 3 levers on the floor (column shift).

So I take it you didn't remove the drive shafts and drop the transmission crossmember? I remember seeing that the washer and snap ring would be difficult. I have a Harbor Freight scope I bought years ago to check cylinder walls.

Well? Did you pull the trigger on the overdrive?

I'm building another 2A with disc brakes. I just might put the overdrive kit on this one instead.

Quoted from dasvis:

Looks like a little overkill on the brakes for something that weighs 2400#.... but it's going to STOP for sure!
Way, way better than the original 9" drums & those shitty manual adjusters.

My father in law started this and wanted disc brakes. He just passed away, so I'm finishing up what he wanted. My drum brakes are marginal at best.

Quoted from dasvis:

What are you doing for a master cylinder & proportioning valve? Keeping the original pedal setup or??

I have the standard master cylinder and a proportioning valve. I'll probably use the standard setup and mount the proportioning valve on the frame rail somewhere accessible.

1946 Willys CJ2A build #4 is well underway. Added a Saturn overdrive to this one.

Don't forget to bolt the throttle linkage on the back of the block BEFORE the body goes on.
Are you running wheel spacers with the disc brakes?

Yep. I have the throttle linkage to bolt on as well as the coil bracket (which I've seen leak coolant). Still have a bit to do yet before running the engine.

Yes. Had to install 1.5" spacers to clear the calipers. It'll be interesting to see how it looks once the fenders and tub are on.

#845 3 months ago
Quoted from dasvis:

[quoted image]
This is my 1953 CJ3A in progress- brakes just mocked up to test for clearances. I used Brennan garage's bracket kit to install Geo Tracker disc brakes. The fit is VERY impressive & it all installed with virtually no modifications. All I had to do was kiss the rotor stud holes with a 1/2" drill bit.
I may or may not need to run spacers & longer wheel studs, depending on which wheels I run. If I do I think it's going to just be little 1/4" shims.
Cant wait to try these out- those factory 9" drum brakes leave a bit to be desired.

I don't know whose kit was used got the discs on this one as they were already installed on the axles. I tried without spacers but there wasn't any clearance. Yours looks like the way to go. Any modifications with master cylinder or proportioning valve?
