Hi all,

On the final leg of getting this complete rebuild complete... Going through final testing (Solenoids)...

Seem to have an issue with both the Thing knocker and Thing kickout tests... When i run both in the test menu all the lights die and the machine locks up (doesnt respond to any test button presses...)

Thing up/down thests work fine with no issues.....

Video -> https://streamable.com/qvbdc

Anyone had this before or any suggestions please??

Cheers
Paul

Check the solenoid(s) for tie-back diodes

#3 5 years ago

Hi Cody - No diodes on any of these, which is how i believe they are supposed to be??

Test the knocker coil for resistance and see if it has shorted. If it passes then do a continuity check from J132 pin 2 to the knocker, then knocker to J107 pin 3. Try the same for the thing kickout.

Thanks asmig....

Checking, Getting 4 Ohms for both Thing and knocker coils....

Question - could someone confirm the color coding on a real TAF for J107 please... the reason i ask is because from the manual it goes....

1------>------->------->------->-------->6
Red...Vio/Or...Vio/Yel...BLANK...Vio/Gn... Red/Whi

However beforehand and after re-molexing, it's like the below.. which differs from the manual....

I'm pretty sure what you have in your hand is correct, I know the manual is wrong cause I've been there. I'll confirm later when I'm home.

The diagram of J107 on page 3-9 is wrong (pin 1 <-> pin5 )
On page 3-19 is a correct version of J107 (power circuits)

Quoted from Mageek:

correct !

Checked J132 to each of the first 8 Solenoids... all good. Also checked each to the adjacent (1-3-4-5-6-7-8) - all good. Then buzzed this back to J107 pin 3 - all good. As mentioned, just checked both Knocker and thing kickout coils - Both good at 4 Ohms.

Cent seem to find any info on the Thing magnet coil (Solenoid 6) - it's coming in at around 69.5 Ohms, which seems a little high, however i can't find anything to reference it to to know if it is correct...

Just stripped the Thing magnet down... took readings directly from the coil... 70.1 Ohms.. no obvious issues with the windings that i can see...

Current status

Thing Knocker - Drive wire disconnected (thin)
Thing Magnet - Connected
Thing Kickout - Connected

in tests...

Thing Knocker - nothing (as expected)
Thing magnet - Works fine
Thing kickout - Machine dies

Next up... Change of the Thing kickout coil, despite testing ok...

Coil changed on Thing kickout... No difference at all..

Does the plunger move smoothly in the coil and bracket? Try taking the coil out of the mechanism and see if firing it with nothing attached causes a reboot.

Good thinking... nothing obvious, however more than happy to give it a go when i get home tonight

Will report back...

Ok - a bit of an update... So on a whim i replaced the Driver board to see if the issue was with the coils/cabling or with the Board itself.

The swap proved the issue onto the Driver board... Once it was swapped out then everything seemed to work properly.

No obvious issue on the board. Because these are fed by separate Transistors... its unlikely in my eyes that the issue is on all of these individual feeds - they aren't common at all....the First common place i can see is U5, or failing this U4... unless anyone has any other suggestions??

do you have any mod's hooked up to your 5 volts PS?

Nope - No mods at all. This is following a rebuild, so wanted to keep as vanilla as possible
