My guess is that you have an intermittent connection on one of the 2 wires that powers the coil in the Thing hand. In the case you describe, Thing should grab the ball and disappear below the playfield, but should retain the ball on the energized Thing hand coil and then rise back above the playfield and deposit the ball back onto the playfield. In your case, I'd guess that the power to the coil gets interrupted some time when the Thing hand is below the playfield, and in that case the ball falls off the Thing hand coil and down into the pan and rolls to the swamp, so the ball is no longer present on the energized Thing hand coil when Thing rotates back above the playfield.
