This post will be a place to discuss and show off lighting mod on the most popular title ever!

I was particularly interested in the swamp light mod and vault light. Are they interactive or just tied into the g.i.

#3 10 years ago

Finally got a pic of mine with the glass off.
This shows the bookcase spotlight and the swamp light.
Both are just hooked into my GI, but you can attach them to any lamp for whatever effect you are after.
Just click on the photo to get the larger file size.

I also tied mine to the g.i. Used a super bright and aimed it through the crack in the upper left corner. I see yours looks like a 44/47 tucked in the hollow.spot just above the swamp.

Yea. I did mine before LED's were available.
I used an only 44 bayonet style base from and old parts game and mounted it behind that upper target in the swamp.
Works great. I just used a green rubber cover to change the color to green.
Now I have an LED in its place, but the socket is the same.

Strykers: an led strip in the back of that does wonders for that game. I can bring one out when I pick up Metallica if you're interested.

markmon,

Where do you tie into the 12 volts needed for the LED strip?

I thought about adding one of those to my TAF.

Good thread. Please keep the ideas coming!

I just picked up a TAF a few weeks back, and I'm amazed how dark the playfield is. Before bringing this one home, I don't think I had ever played one in a completely dark room....

Here's my bookcase spot. Went with a pink superbright. Purple looked good too.

I used 555 flex head green in my swap area looks great and well hidden.

I might try that too. You can see the led in certain positions on mine.

To give a more general answer...Anywhere on the board you can find 12volt. I think it is on or around j116 j117 area. Taking a guess here from a vague memory. But get the DMM and find which of this is 12 volts.

On adds LED strips under the ramp(s), int he swap and under back top part of inner cabinet is bad ass. Then add at least a set of double spots down on the sling plastics and again on the post on the top of the swamp on the right. Makes a horribly dark game really bright and very playable!

Adding some green lights to the swap is a must.....
I also added a blue LED spot light for the bookcase area that is normally dark.

My vault is a 555 socket tied to the g.i. Light under the staircase. Not sure the blue works for me yet. Might go ww or purple or even yellow

I have 2 questions regarding some of these lighting mods...1st, where do you purchase the spot lights? I like the idea of mounting one near the swamp pointing towards the bookcase..2nd, regarding the green swamp light mod..cannot you simply put 2 (?) green LEDs in the swamp area? Someone on ebay has them for 24.99 but again, if it's just the matter of swapping out green LED's?...
Comments welcome!

Pinball Life sells them as one part, but while they're on vacation you can get http://www.marcospecialties.com/pinball-parts/545-5409-01 and combine it with http://www.marcospecialties.com/pinball-parts/077-5206-00

Great idea. I'm gonna have to try this. I wonder how yellow will look...kinda like gold from the treasure

The yellow from pinballbulbs.com without the cap looks very gold

Do you have to add Diodes to the lights? Why do some lights have diodes and some don't. I know that a diode keeps the electrical current going one way, but I would think if you are tieing into another light you wouldn't need to use one. Is that right?

#20 10 years ago

No diode needed to tie to existing g.i.

#21 10 years ago

I'm not going to tie my chair lights into g.i. lights. I'm going to tie them to each chair light. Still no diodes needed?

#22 10 years ago

As long as your chair lights are led. Just tie into each leg of a single socket.

#23 10 years ago

Cool thanks.

A spot mounted to the back of the chair lit the bumpers well and is invisible from the player perspective.

I used the "thing" backlight pcb when I got my color DMD.....made a custom wood overlay w holes cut for the lights and attached to the backboard...3red dual LEDs left, 3 right, and a green in the middle for some depth.....looks awesome, and not that hard to do......

You can see the lights on the backboard on this one...
