Stern have the worst battery holders. It is quite likely the connection to the battery pack has become lose as a result of changing the batteries. I have had that happen with Stern games. I would take the board off and reflow the solder to the battery pack. That will solve your "open door" issue, I believe, so you can focus on the other issue.

Afraid I haven't experience the other issue.
