Figured I would share/document my first playfield swap. I picked up a players condition T2 recently and have had some extra time on my hands lately. Feel free to let me know if I'm doing anything stupid. I should have most everything to complete the swap this week but am still looking for a nice original set of pricing cards and apron.

Started off with the t-nuts. Used some random washers and bolts to pull them in so I didn't have to use a hammer. There were 4 on top of the playfield that I had to remove the clear from. I cut around the inside with an exacto knife and used bits from my Kruzman install kit. The clear didn't come up so I didn't have to glue it back down.

Next is the pop bumper nails. I got one in so far. Will probably do the rest tomorrow. Used a countersink bit on my drill (very slowly) and hammered them most of the way in. Then used the same puller stuff that I used for the t-nuts to finish.

Quoted from kruzman:

If you remember you may want to keep track of your hours. In hindsight it will be good to know

I think at the end of it I won't want to know how much time (and money) it took lol.

Pop nails are in and mylared. Shooter lane also mylared. Next up putting all of the sub assemblies on molex connectors and going through them. Also transferring the lamp boards over.

One of Peter's.

Rebuilt flippers put on plugs and transplanted. Should I bother with the alignment roll pins? Seems like a high risk vs reward pounding them in. Still waiting on one package to arrive with a bunch of molex connectors so can't do much at the moment.

More stuff done. Don't mind the dirty coil wrappers and flipper bats. They'll be replaced.

A little more progress today. Just need to move the bumper coil and turret assemblies over then can transfer the rest of the underside all at once.

#21 3 years ago

Bumpers, turret and switches transplanted. Should be able to move the lamps and flashers tomorrow to finish up the bottom.

Bottom is done. I put the bumper lamps on wire and molex connectors so I didn't have to mess with staples and the traditional socket leads.

More stuff done on the topside. Spent 30 minutes just regraining one of the smaller ball guides. Not looking forward to doing the last three.

Quoted from Manny65:

Worth the effort though - it's coming along nicely. Well done

Thanks!

Quoted from kruzman:

Looking fantastic! Can I ask what you do for a living? For a "NOOB" you are rocking this thing out in record time and looking perfect. I am guessing an engenier? shop smith?
I have a friend who sets up and maintains the machines at a production plant, so working on pinball came perfectly natural to him. Before I got in to pinball my mechanical skill level was the equivalent of a brake job on a subaru outback. I was a finish carpenter but totally different skill set and tools.

I'm a network engineer for a telecom company. I don't have any mechanical background but like taking things apart lol.

#28 3 years ago
Quoted from Manny65:

LOL I'm good at taking things apart too ... but it's the putting them back together again that I struggle with

I bought the game with a bunch of extra lighting and junk alligator clipped all over the bottom of the playfield and hacked up GI wiring. First thing I did was remove all of it and put it back to "stock". Makes it much easier. Then just take a million pictures when taking it apart and do it in sections.

Quoted from ReadyPO:

Looking good! looks like you are using two rotisseries one for the new PF and one for the old - or just one rotisserie and one PF holder?

Two pindoc pro rotisseries. They are great.

#32 3 years ago

Made some more progress today. Almost done with the right side. Swapped out the colored GI for white.

Calling the playfield "done for now". Just missing the large ramps and upper pieces that will be added once the final wax job has been done. Going to start on the cabinet next. Also got to use the pinrestore rivet press kit that I picked up a couple months ago. Took about an hour to build. Replaced the mangled sling switches too. Wondering if I should install mylar in the sling areas? This game is going to stay in my collection with light use, not be routed.

Now for the part I've been dreading... the cabinet. I'm certainly no carpenter or handyman and don't like re-decaled cabinets but don't have much choice here. The original artwork is severely faded. There are lock bar holes that need filled, and someone used red sharpie to touch up the faded florescent red on the front and sides. I'm going to leave the back of the cabinet and head original. Today I gutted the head and sanded down the sides and front.

The rivets look great! Were did you find or what did you use for the mounting brackets?

I used the original brackets

Nothing too exciting to report. Just a bunch of cleaning and getting the cabinet ready to decal. Hopefully will have it finished sometime this week. I rebuilt part of the power box since someone was monkeying around in there. Also cleaned up the lock bar receiver. I think I'm done for today.

Quoted from Manny65:

What did you use to clean the lockbar receiver?

Wire wheel on a drill then red and green scuff pads.

The decals are on and I hope to get the playfield in this weekend. There is zero extra ink on the decals so they have to be absolutely perfect or there will be an edge. Not sure why they couldn't add an extra half inch to each side. Oh well. Hopefully I can play it again next week.

Anyone know where this plastic goes? I've got the rest figured out.

Quoted from Quadrider:

Awesome job! Strongly considering doing this to my T2, and really digging this thread. I was under the impression when rebuilding flippers to always mount the coil lugs on the opposite Side of coil stops?

The flippers were rebuilt by the previous owner. I just unscrewed them from the old playfield and put them on the new one as-is. They worked fine when removed so I didn't change anything.

#55 3 years ago
Quoted from Manny65:

The reason for having the coil the other way is to get it as far away from where where the plunger hits the coil stop, this is to limit the shock and the potential cracking of the solder joints on the coil terminals. It'll work fine the other way but I guess it was done to reduce the chance of sited machines breaking down.

Good to know. The leads from the large caps on the flipper assemblies aren't long enough to flip the coil so I'll leave it as-is. I've already reflowed the coil terminals and cleaned up and sketchy wiring/connections. With the light use this game will be getting from home use it shouldn't be an issue.

I put the head back on today and hooked everything back up. Also put a coat of paint on the coin door. Just need to finish painting the coin door and gun assembly before turning it on.

#57 3 years ago

I just put the last coat of paint on the gun and coin door. Will reassemble and reinstall them probably tomorrow and see what happens when I turn the game back on.

Quoted from retroware99:

What are you using to repaint the gun?

Here is what I'm using. Not bad for $5.

Put the coin door and gun back on today and fired it up. Hmm... no smoke but the display isn't working. Found I forgot to plug in the small molex connector by the transformer. After plugging it in I really only had to adjust one slingshot rubber and the lane guide by the left outlane. Everything else was fine. Now I just need to find a nice apron because mine is pretty ugly.

Reflowed and recapped the boards. Also replaced two bridges that someone previously messed with and added the heat sink. Just need an apron. If anyone comes across a nice original apron please message me. Thanks

It's an option but I'd prefer a screen printed original over a decal. I would trade mine plus cash for a nicer one.
