In the past 3 months, my Terminator 2 has developed an issue with what’s displayed on the DMD. Mostly it’s a line down the center of the DMD.

I’ve swapped out the DMD with another pin, but the issue stayed with T2, and T2’s DMD looked fine on the other pin. So the problem isn’t with the DMD.

I swapped the ribbon cable from the DMD Controller Board to the DMD with another pin, but this issue stayed with T2.

I’ve re-seated all the connectors in the back box, but the issue remains.

I completely rebuilt the high power section of the DMD Controller Board (all new components from Great Plains Electronics), cleaned up and reinstalled the board, but the problem is still there!

Any suggestions of where to look for other potential problems would be very appreciated!

Many thanks!

Thanks LTG and Chris!

I’ll try swapping the DMD controller board, and if that fixes the issue, I’ll replace the RAM.

Thanks again!

Okay... I swapped in the DMD Controller Board from my Shadow and got this result (see below):

However, when I put the Shadow’s DMD Controller Board back in the Shadow, now I get nothing on my Shadow DMD.

Did I just kill the Shadow’s board by putting it into T2?

Excellent! All reseated and Shadow is back up and running perfectly again!

Thanks! That made me worry for a couple of minutes!

So any ideas why the Shadow’s DMD board didn’t solve the issue when in T2?

Right... so I put T2’s DMD Controller Board into Shadow, and the issue followed the board.

Ah yes... RAM error...

A generous friend donated a new 6264 chip (Thanks Kim!), which I’ll be installing soon.

I’ll post my results when it’s installed.

Swapped out the 6264 RAM chip, and...

No more DMD issue! Big thanks to @LTG, @ChrisHibler, and Menace as well as Kim for his generosity with the RAM!

Quoted from RussMyers:

...why not install a socket for the new 6264 RAM chip?
RussM

No reason not to, other than that I didn’t have a spare socket when I was doing it. I’ve got a Hakko desoldering pump, and the job was very neat and painless.

On soldering in the new chip, I ultilized a technique that I’ve read about here (Terry’s Soldering Guide) whereby you alternate from side to side and end to end of the chip so as not to cause the chip to absorb too much heat if you were to just go sequentially applying heat down one side and up the other.

Quoted from PinballManiac40:

Definitely a good time to upgrade NVRAM to the MPU board.

I’m going to do that next!
