My first post!
We recently took our pin out of storage, and there were some display problems. Ribbons all seemed fine, and 3 of the displays worked fine, but one display was dead, and P1+P3 were missing the ones digit (7 digit display).

I thought (hoped) that the main problem was in the display control board, and with the busted display, I jumped for a Pinside replacement...

NOOO! All displays work, but same problem with P1+3. I tried switching up the ribbons (still originals), and the problem does not change.

Any thoughts, oh pinball gods?

Looking in my manual, it seems to have to do with strobe 8. Help!

Yep. Strobe 8.
Wiggle the connector lower left on the MPU board.
This could be as simple as a fractured solder joint at the header.

Oh boy. I figured I out. My battery pack corroded while we had the machine in storage (expired 2002, I blame my naive youth for everything). Replaced the battery pack and thought the corrosion was pretty contained, but yep, I found the strobe 8 trace on the board, and corrosion damage... I did my brst to clean it up a bit, and it did make a difference (ones digit lights up, but over bright). Should I use a soldered wire to bypass the trace, amd cut through it? Is that a less risky first step than asking one of my engineer friends if they're willing to retrace it for me?

There are quite a few traces around the 74154 and the SR11 label that need proper alkaline abatement treatment. Washing with vinegar (or your favorite acid) won't due for this job. The solder mask must be sanded off, corrosion removed to bare copper, conformal coat bare copper by tinning or other method, and then reinstall removed parts. The corrosion doesn't look too bad for now, but I'd get on it. That board is tough to replace these days.

Agree. Sand those black traces down to the copper and tin the traces. If you've never done it before, go slow and be sure to clean the sanded stuff away before tinning. Also, when done, test with meter to confirm that you didn't short any two together.

On a similar subject, best practice is to completely remove that old battery holder from the board and either mount batteries remotely or install NVRAM. Finding a replacement/used system 9 board is not easy and although you may be able to use a sys11 repro, they are quite expensive.

Thank you all! Yes, I guess I will get to cleaning all of those traces.

For an immediate fix, I bypasses the trace on the back of the board...
