This hopefully is a easy one. I'm repairing some trace damage that was done on this board when the pia was removed at U4. Almost all the damaged traces were obvious other than one, pin 40. I can't tell if it had no connection to the pad or not. The schematic sheet 1 has it labeled "sound busy" and references it to sheet 3 where I don't see it at all which leads me to believe it may not be used.

So before I solder in a new sip socket I'm hoping someone who has a spare board laying around could take a look and verify for me if there's a connection to it or not. One thing, there is a thru hole right next to pin 40 but it doesn't look to me as they were connected but I'm not 100% sure about that.

    Thanks!

    U4 is a 6821.
Yes, pin 40 should be connected.
It should be connected in some way to pin 40 of U5, for instance.

I'm not sure as to what you mean by it should be connected in some way to pin 40 of U5 for instance? I don't see where the trace was pulled off the board at pin 40 on either side of the board. Any way to get a picture?

I just checked a System 9 board I have on the bench, there is no connection to pin 40 for either U4 or U5. The schematic does show the sound busy signal as coming from pin 40 but there is no connection on the board. I tried to take a picture but it is impossible to get the correct light and angle to prove the point.

I would not solder the chip in, use pinstrips or a socket.

It means that pin 40 of U4 and U5 should be connected. Not certain if that's true though, I don't have a board in front of me.

Thanks all. I just needed to know if it had a trace missing or not since the schematics wern't 100% clear. And yes, I agree especially these 40 pin chips should be socketed.

Whoops. My mistake. Pin 40 of a 6821 is CA1 which can be purposed for different functions.
It won't be connected to pin 40 of anything else.
