When I had a display issue on my 80B (garbage characters like you mention), it ended up being an issue with the ram.

Replaced it.
Installed this NVRAM from barakandl. If you've ever read that Gottlieb boards cannot use NVRAM's because of the select lines(?), barakandl's design has onboard logic which makes his NVRAM battery eliminating module compatible with Gottlieb sys80/A/B. I believe there is also a PS thread from vid1900 reviewing the product and possibly regarding installation.
