So in a pile of parts from a Gottlieb Haunted House there was an extra display with writing on the glass saying "Do NOT use will damage MPU". The dots on the glass are still black, not white, so I assume the glass might still be good. What could cause the damage to the MPU? I am replacing capacitors on the other 4 displays as well as the IC 6118's. If I replace all the caps, the IC's, and the resistor, will that fix what is going on in the display that says it has an issue?

Maybe. Who knows how much expertise the fellow has that wrote the comments.

    Why replace working 6118s?

Look at the thin filaments that hang above the display segments. Sometimes one of them breaks, and if the loose ends touch the segments it might be bad for electronics.

Got it! I will look. I replaced the 6118 because I had missing segments even after repining the connectors. All good now. I will check the glass again really close.

If it turns out to have a broken filament do everyone a favor and fix the glass with a BFH. Then no one will get screwed by it again.

So, here is what happened. The display that had writing on it stating it was bad, did not have a broken filament. However, one of my displays had the middle filament broken. That one has made it's way into the garbage. I replaced the TTL's, caps and resistor on the other, works good!

Save the UDN6118s on that bad board!

I was able to find some 6118's no problem. They are on eBay if you are looking for some. I also believe that the ones that I had on my boards were corrupted or shorted.

eBay IC purchases, usually from China, are always risky. Especially odd and long obsolete parts like the 6118.

GPE has some that would work on Gottlieb displays. 6118C. $5.

I was able to find NOS 6118’s, with the made in Philippines stamp underneath. I don’t trust China chips either, I’d rather go without it than screw around and do it twice. The problem I have now is finding a good source for different slow blow fuses since Radio Shack is gone. Thoughts?

Lowes and Home depot have standard glass fuses. Limited selection and expensive. I order online and just stock up.

Both Great Plains Electronics and Pinballlife.com can take care of your fuse needs, @r8f1k.
