I purchased a 100% working sound board for my Whirlwind off of eBay. Surprise it does not work. When you turn the game on you get a click click click sound. If you turn the game off and on it usually boots on the second attempt. Do you think capacitors, resistors or...... The game I am testing in is a 100% working Whirlwind. I purchased the board for a project game

I should add, it appears every IC on the board has been socketed and the IC replaced. Any ideas??

Did you buy the board from a good honest seller?

I believe I have a couple here. I will look.

This isn't a Whirlwind or System 11 sound board, the serial number game ID number "40104" suggests this board came from a Williams "Super High Impact" game. Here's a thread about how to make this board work in a pinball machine:

    https://pinside.com/pinball/forum/topic/williams-super-high-impact-arcade-audio-board-to-system-11-conversionhack

The thread specifically states that the EPROM chips will have to be upgraded from the 27c256, to the larger 27c010 EPROM chip. The pics suggest this upgrade didn't happen since your chips don't fit properly in the sockets. Given this, your game is not going to be able to read the EPROM data properly.

If you unplug the sound board, does the game boot normally?

The board actually will work the way it is setup. It does not keep the cpu from booting, however the sound board generally does not boot on the initial turn on of the game. If you turn the game off and back on most of the time the sound board boots and all it well. It is something in the start up of the board. Caps?

So you saying the CPU board boots 100% of the time no matter what, but this sound board only boots on the second or third power cycle?

Do you have an option to install a proper sound board to test with?
