Just did this fix on Bad Cats and wanted to lay out the problem/solution and parts for anyone else who comes across it. I think it should apply to most/all System 11B and maybe 11C.

Fixed a Bad Cats where the game would randomly reset to "Press Start" after a coil fired (any coil - doghouse did it, flipper did it, etc). Sometimes it happened on ball 1, sometimes ball 3, seemed random. It wasn't like a power on reset, just jumped to the "Press Start" rotation immediately, ending the game. Turned out to be the caps to the left of the battery area were wasted from age. The axial cap and the three radial caps in a row just over from it.

The axial cap should have had 22uf capacitance. Measured and it was 16.

The radial caps were way worse. Each should have been 100uf, but were 11, 14, 18uf respectively. I'm amazed the game worked at all once I got those out and measured them.

To do this repair, you need 3 of:
10-EEU-TA1V101-ND (the radial caps, 100uf, 35v)

and 1 of:
56-MAL203036229E3CT-ND (the axial cap 22uf, 25v)

I ordered them from digikey. Installed them today and it's playing like a champ again. Here's a pic of the cap locations (accidental sun artifact on this image from the sun's reflection):

Thanks for sharing this info! There seems to be lots of capacitors failing in these 30-35 year old games

Once I got them out and measured the capacitance of the three 100uf caps and they were all less than 20uf capacitance left, I was shocked the pin worked at all.

Those pieces of crap only lasted 25 years beyond their design life!

Standard procedure here to replace those four plus 2-4 more in the sound subsystem.
2x 10uf
1x 100uf
1x 470uf

The 2 10uf caps can be the cause of missing sounds.

Well done PinMonk

I'll check out the sound ones, too, thanks!

EDIT: There's like 7 caps or more on the sound board above the main board. Just replace them all while I'm in there?

I wouldn't.
Unless the caps are the Phillips lightish blue caps used on the preDCS sound board, replacing aps on the D-11581 System 11 sound board doesn't improve audio quality at all.

I'm basically just wanting to make sure all the sounds are playing. Is that more cap replacement on the main board and not the sound board?

System 11 sound origination is always guesswork.
Originally, I was going to catalog each sound, which board it came from, and the "sound lane" that was used (DAC, 55536, other).
But it became very complex. So I punted.

I have been cataloging the sound at a higher level for each game.
I'm not quite finished. I add them as they come through my shop.
But I do have "Bad Cats" in there.
