Have you tried replacing the bulbs? Those lights are typically part of the General Illumination circuit, the lights that are normally on most of the time the game is on. If the bulbs are good, you might have bad sockets. If the bulbs and sockets are good, the next thing to suspect would be a bad connector for the lighting in the backbox or a broken wire under the playfield.
Ended up being the T relay. For mario anyways
Up the back right on floor under playfield
If the back box lights are out (which half mine where) it was the A relay.
Easily diagnosed by putting a alligator clip on leaf switch making it work
I took out and disconnected. used contact cleaner and a fine wet rub sand paper to clear the grime build up... Took a little adjusting as well but now all working good...(alot like 10/15 times plug in take out but finally got it)
2 years of annoyance troubleshooting the few moments of free time have finally knocked it on the head! Happy new year
