Hey, maybe this group can help me. I got a SOF recently, and whenever the orange target pops up, the red target drops without the ball hitting it. I the C-clip was loose, so I tightened it, but that didn't work. Can't see anything obvious that might be causing the orange target to drop like that. Any ideas?

I’m not familiar with the drops on this game, but from other games I own, I’m thinking that perhaps the spring is too loose and doesn’t hold the drop target on its ledge tight enough. Have you tried a new spring?

#3 3 years ago

Is there a spring under one of the eclips that pushes the target against the ledge?

Or the ledge is worn out. I had that happen.

Gonna have to pull the assembly and fix. Easy and fun to work on.

Spring doesn't seem any looser than the other target's springs, but I will order a new one and see if that does the job. Going to check the ledge to see if there is wear there as well. Will update. Thanks.

I'd not talking about the spring that pulls down the target, fyi. I'm talking about the spring that pushes the target tight to the assembly. If that is missing, the target wont grab onto the ledge.

I’ve found it is sometimes hard to tell. You could also try taking out a couple of links in the spring and see if that helps while you wait for the new one.

Typically, problems with the drop targets on SoF are related to the opto board under the mini playfield. These are very problematic and can cause all kinds of weird symptoms with the drops. An improved replacement board was released (I think by GPE?) some years ago. If you can't find anything physically wrong with the drops, this could be the source of the problem.

Sounds like his issue is mechanical. One drop target it dropping when it's neighboring target is struck.

This makes me think that either the "pull down" spring is too tight and not original, OR the spring that pushes the target flush to the assembly is missing and/or too weak OR the target rest bar is worn (more unlikely). There are TWO springs associated with each target.

OP, if you haven't yet, look at the manual. Taking apart the assembly you'll get the idea of how it works.

Yes, I doubt it is the opto's. The orange drops when the red comes back up. The opto's register that a target has dropped in order to signal the coils to fire em back up. I am dealing with a target that is dropping when it shouldn't. I will try switching the springs with one of the ones on the different colour targets, and see if the problem occurs with the different target. That should confirm if it is weak springs. Thanks all.

Hi I've added some photos of how the assembly should look. Perhaps you have one of the washers missing inbetween the compression springs. Good luck. Also cean the target ledge.
Photo is off a Bad cats but same set up just fewer coils.

since were talking SOF drops I had a call a while back where the drops would go dead after some play. It was a cracked solder conn for 12vdc on the power supply.

pinballplusMN Yep, pinside already helped me fix that problem.

Okay, so I switched the spring from the orange target to the red target, but same problem. When orange target pops back up (now has red's old springs), red target drops (now has orange's old springs). I took some pics. I don't see anything wrong. Ledge seems clean. I tried tightening the pull down spring on the red drop, but it didn't work.

Did notice the red bounce a little when the blue target (next to the orange) pops back up, but other targets don't budge.

Any ideas?

Have you examined the ledge that the targets sit on like Blackbeard said to see if it is worn on the side of the red target?

I’m wondering if it’s worn in the middle area and just not allowing the target to catch or, slip off.

Doesn't seem worn to me.

Could the target be slightly warped.
Also try swapping the pressure spring small 1cm one with next door target
And clean the inside of the tragets they are filthy.
They should be completely free of grease.
Also washer that meets up with the target has to have the round smooth side facing target groove.

Good advice. And against what most will say, I like to add a tiny bit of wd-40 to the back of the targets. Not oil. Wd-40.

Thanks AndyBadCatsUK I did swap both sets of springs. I will do a tear down and clean em up. Do you mean that the C-clip opening should face down?

Hi... no the top washer that binds to the target has a smooth and rough side.
Thinking about this I expect its the plastic target ledge that needs a good clean.
Take some photos while you have it stripped. Good luck
