[EDIT] This project has been replaced by SmartDmd

I have connected my AC/DC pinball to a LCD monitor.

Here is the result :

I only used a low cost FPGA demo board, a few resistors and connectors for this (no processor or software are involved in this, only coded logic). The images can be displayed in single color (any RGB combination) or fake colors as show in the 2nd part of the video.

I am working on Pinball Browser in order to add color images

Some FPGA board already have SVGA interface but are more expensive.
The reason why I am using this specific FPGA board is that I won it at a forensic challenge and I didn't know what to do with it...

Very easy to install : just unplug the dmd ribbon cable from the sam pcb and plug it on the board, connect the Sam pcb to the board and use a USB cable to get power from the Sam pcb.

The monitor could also be placed behind the backglass to replace the existing dmd.

Here is the board :

and a quick and dirty installation...

Man oga83, I feel like I'm going to open one of your threads one of these days and you'll have made an entire pinball machine in a weekend!

Like the pinballbrowser, great job! I would say that you're the MacGyver of pinball machines, but that's truly an understatement!

Open source FPGA board with mini VGA display would be the bomb.
I'm certainly willing to spend some time on this after ST:M is done (IE after tpf2014)

What's the point?

#11 10 years ago

Because you can?!
I think it'd be bad ash to have a big monitor displaying the DMD ... ie have 4 or 6 games drive a single large display. Think of the uses at tourneys or even basement arcades.

What's the point? Well, for one, I can see using this thing to output scores to a big tournament display, for starters. That would be fun if the video is split off and the DMD still gets it's data too so the player can see what's going on.

How about this: BECAUSE IT WOULD ENABLE A DIRECT LCD REPLACEMENT FOR THE BIG FREAKIN DMDS THAT COLORDMD DOESN'T COVER! >=\
