I recently bought a new Surf Champ, but the colour scheme on the backbox differs from the other I have (see pictures). Does any one knows why?image-10.jpgsurfchamp1.jpg

There is a slight difference between Surfer the 2p and Surf Champ the 4p, the size of the head dictated truncated graphics on the side. What difference are you noticing?

as seen in this pic...surfhead2.jpg

Has the one game been repainted? The lower front panel also has had the stencil flipped. Looks like the side art also used a slightly different stencil.

It's the uber-rare "Thin Yellow Stripe On Top" model, which were only made on Friday afternoons in the summer of 1976.

Congratulations, and good eye!

Is there the possibility that there were actually a different set of art work from the factory? A later production run with an easier stencil design.

#13597 Blue on top

Just checked mine.... yellow on top

Where do I see the s/n?

#18 3 years ago
Quoted from Meegis:

Where do I see the s/n?

3 locations.
Just above the coin door to the left.
The edge of the rail behind the coin box area, under the Gottlieb notice.
Printed on the top of the back box.

The Gottlieb flyer for Surf Champ shows the Blue bar above the yellow bar. On IPDB they even have pictures with the Yellow bar on top. It is that different side art, on the back box that needs to be answered.

Different in what way? Seems to match the flyer, and the pics of games on IPDB (at least).

I think you are trying to compare an original game with a repainted one.

"Guilty, as charged". Guess I wasn't paying my usual attention to the details, like who is the O.P.? (Now back to the Rum & Egg Nog.)

I had a new look at the yellow stripe above the blue surf champ (#11761), and I have to say that it all looks original, certainly not overpainted. So here are some detailes: #11761 on 3 places, in the cabinet final inspection #37, relayboard #22, lite box D10824, inspected 1383, big printed in the lite box ESC and writen 026.
The normal blue over yellow surf champ #12802 on 3 places, cabinet final inspection #21, relayboard Belgium( no number, but it looks like a #16 board), lite box D10824, inspected 1383.
So the big difference is the ESC sign and the number 026. Does anyone knows where that stands for?

So I officially have two surf champs.... one of each color way lol

Blue on top is where it's at!

Stencil art at Gottlieb: not an exact science.

I had two Volleys in the shop recently, and they've clearly used two different stencils. Cabinets look like came from different manufacturers--air notches on the top of the head were cut differently on them.

Surf Champ #13750 - blue on top
Surfer #5456 - yellow on top

I'm in the process of painting both heads and will match the way the colors were originally done even if they are different

I'll post some pictures when I'm done
