I find this a bit embarrassing, I thought I had my process down – I have rebuilt a dozen or more steppers and as always I took a bunch of photos but somehow I have parts left over!!

Surf Champ / Bonus Unit – been in the project cue. Someone spent some time cleaning, polishing and over lubing with gobs of ?silicone?. The Bonus Unit gleams but was the main spring was solid as was other pivot points, nothing moved. Took it partially apart where needed, cleaned it up, put it back together and have the two pictured parts left over – a washer and a long thin black bolt. The unit seems to step up and down MANUALLY now, smooth action : ready to put back in the machine except I have these these leftovers!

Is there a washer between the two arms on the shoulder bolt? There is a similar washer on the pivot point of the horizontal arm along the bottom of the unit.

I don’t recall the black bolt at all – is it even a part of this stepper? Slightly smaller in diameter than those on the switch stack. Things do disappear on their own sometimes so I guess they could also just appear .

Prevegen: Yes or No - tho may need to sell a pin to fund. Yike$!

On Spirit of 76, I count six washers, four on the two stop brackets, one on the pivot point of the long arm and one under the nylock nut on the back.

Thanks DaMoib

The washer is to go on the back of the shoulder screw ((why is this a screw and not a bolt?)). I had tried it there but my plate has a burr that did not allow it to lie flat so I thought I had erred and put just the self-locking nut on.

Now just the mysterious thin black screw/bolt?????

I will put the unit back on the underside this eve and continue to get this to start : the replay unit is also solid lube but the others move freely so hopes are high!

I had a PM suggesting to add a photo. This is the rebuilt unit and related catalog drawings. This bonus unit is more like a replay unit than the step switch. Using my trusty '78 Gottlieb Parts Catalog {plug for PBR), I find both drawings useful.

Switch stack is just pegged in place for photo - to be aligned/ tightened/ gap inspect/
Washer solved.
Black screw not noted in photos from the SC or the SO76.
Going with the idea that it is extraneous until the unit is operating and has an issue.IMG_2063 (resized).JPGIMG_2063 (resized).JPG

Not really related, but reminded me of something we did to a coworker who was always a PIA and bragging about not needing an IPB (Illustrated Parts Breakdown) or notes when putting stuff together after he had taken it apart for repairs.

While he went on a break, we added two screws to the box of parts he was using. He then spent the rest of the day taking the controller apart and back together again, trying to figure out where the two other screws went. We were laughing like crazy. Only after he got it together again toward the end of the day did we tell him we tossed those screws in. He wasn't too happy with us, especially the more he complained, the harder we laughed. however, after that, he quit talking about how he never needed notes or an IPB, so it was a win for us.

My point is, I don't ever recall seeing a small screw like that in a stepper unit, so I wonder if maybe the box you put the parts in had the screw laying in it, and you didn't notice it until after you had the stepper together. I'm not even sure that's a Gottlieb screw - I don't recall seeing black screws in Gottlieb EMs.

Good Luck with the repair.
