It’s not so much the sales tax for me although it will certainly affect NIB sales

It’s the continual price increases by Stern and JJP at a time that they just received a massive income tax cut

Combine the sales tax with rising prices with every release? Will be interesting to see where this story ends

People will probably just keep justifying these expenditures in the grand scheme of things?

    Quoted from jimjim66:

I don't know if it is the "new" Californians that are leaving.
I look at it as people who are willing to sacrifice what California has to offer versus more bang for your buck someplace else. Many people that have been here for a long time can cash out with the high market prices. People are literally selling houses in the bay area for millions of dollars and are basically cashing out on a realtor lottery ticket compared to what they bought the house for 20-25 years ago. They can buy a mansion someplace else in the U.S. as 800 foot fixer upper houses in Sunnyvale sell for 2 million.
On the flip side, as you mentioned, they are being replaced by somebody who has stupid money to buy a fixer upper for millions of dollars. There are people wealthy enough to pay the price. As millionaires are still coming.
California real estate kind of reminds me of the pinball market.

We see it all over Texas Jim, "I can't believe how much house I can buy here with the proceeds from my sale in Cali".

Austin especially as a high tech center.

    That's crazy!

Well you know two of my kids and folks were in the Bay Area for the Warriors game.

They did some tour bus to see the area and were shocked by the "homeless camps and mini cities". Wtf is going on there? Seems like its two classes of people, the wealthy and the homeless.

Due to lack of housing and cost of living it seems the middle class is fleeing some areas of Cali out of necessity?

Looks like you are in the beautiful wine region!

    Quoted from OLDPINGUY:

With Sales Tax, look who this affects the most, as a percentage of income.

    Agreed Art.

State and National Lotteries/scratch off's are worse. It's a direct tax on the poor.

    #194 5 years ago
    Quoted from KloggMonkey:

Tobacco products and cheap booze also.

At least you get some pleasure from that! But yeah, sin taxes are another tax on the poor.

Check out this tax summary of California! Wow

    Quoted from RobT:

If someone stole 3 of your cars but gave you 1 of them back, isn't it still theft?

In Cali the car you get back doesn’t even have wheels Rob

We have a choice on what goods and services we purchase for the most part, a consumption tax. Thus, it’s why we feel “taxed to death” on mandatory taxes. And clearly by comparison we are

As for corporate income tax, previously at the highest in the world. No longer

    Same for personal income taxes

Now this new tax will increase the orange bar

As a % of GDP is not a great measure. I only care about my personal GDP and how much Uncle Sam gets to take and waste

    #288 5 years ago
    Quoted from fosaisu:

Is that figure comparing the countries directly on tax rates? Or is it showing, for each country, how their tax burdens are sifted out among income tax, social security tax, property tax, etc? It looks to me like the bars for each country add up to 100%, in which case this tells me that Australia doesn't have a social security tax, but it doesn't tell me if the overall tax burden is higher in Australia or the US.

It’s part of that same report from westoforme

    #290 5 years ago

And of course if it isn’t crystal clear yet that blue bar referencing Social security is going to get MUCH longer one way or another in the future

Unless our GDP averages 4% for next decade

    #303 5 years ago

Some people struggle with math, i get it, but 2+2 has to equal 4 at some point, which means "entitlement reform" is coming over the next decade.

We have a system whereby more and more people are retiring and living longer with less younger people paying into the system. No need to scrap it, just adjust it or it won't be there for future generations.

Raise the full retirement age to 68 and lower mandatory rmd's to the same age. And mix in a bit of means testing and you can kick the can down the road for a few more decades.

    Quoted from CrazyLevi:

No shit, we all know that. The rich don't pay taxes either but continue to bitch about it.
And, they've got the middle class convinced that this is all good as someday the rich and corporations paying no taxes will help make all of us peasants rich. Also they've got us convinced that the other reason we aren't all rich (besides the rich paying too many taxes) is because poor people get food stamps so they aren't dying in the streets of hunger.
It sucks but what are you gonna do about it? Fuck it, let's go play some pinball.

Let's bitch about 4% GDP growth, never above 2% in the previous 8 yrs, lowest unemployment rate in 40 yrs, including minorities. Not enough workers for the jobs available.

The middle class have woken up. Just not in New York and California

Actually that's not true, a huge swath of Cali middle class are exiting in huge numbers. What's left in the bay area are rich elites and homeless.

And look at the state they are in.....no thanks

    #317 5 years ago
    Quoted from CrazyLevi:

Look at Ice's suggestions to fix Social Security - raise the retirement age to 74 when raising taxes on the rich would accomplish the job. This is the mentality. The rich have won. Economic inequality will continue to grow. We are all fucked. Except rich people they are gonna be fine.
Hey at least I have no kids and a shitload of pinball machines. I'll make a fun time of it!

Raise it to 68, not 74. That's "full retirement" age. You can still pull SS at 62.

And i suggest making the "rich" take out IRA's/401k's at 68 and pay taxes sooner.

It's just a math issue, once again, people are living MUCH longer and the baby boomer generation are going to drain the system.

You can take 100% of the top 1% "rich" people's income and it would pay SS for about a week.

And as usual, you don't ever read anything, I also said mix in some "means testing", which is another way to "tax the rich" that don't need SS.

So stay closed minded Levi and see how that works out.

Maybe you should run for office! Look at what happened in the Bronx. A socialist/communist wave is coming!

    #338 5 years ago
    Quoted from KingBW:

Ummm ... The average age that males in the US die is at age 68. So I vote no on that! I want to retire before I die ... please!. They can collect my 401k withdrawal taxes when I retire and before I die instead of the long delay of when my kids would pay the tax on my remaining 401k inheritance. Tax on that delayed income would be sooner.
    Agree to respectfully disagree ...

Excuse me but good lord some of you people come up with the most bizarre BS ever!

    68? This isn’t the 1800’s

And some others need a CPA. Holy crap

    #340 5 years ago
    Quoted from snaroff:

What's "left" in the bay area are smart/driven/passionate people driving the one industry the US still dominates...software/hardware engineering. I worked with some of the brightest luminaries of Silicon Valley for 20+ years and a majority of them were focused on building cool shit and didn't let money cloud/dominate/distract them.
I understand your tribe is jealous of the enormous wealth creation in the bay area, and there are definitely challenges with the homeless, however this idea that "elites" sit around counting their money while kicking the homeless in the butt couldn't be a more ridiculous characterization. We have a homeless shelter a few blocks from my place and our community supports the homeless with almost no help from the federal government.
    snaroff

I love the tribe in the Bay Area making cool innovative stuff. I’ve made a lot of $$$ off those guys. Thank you

Btw, the Bay Area 1% ers and evil corporations need to stop it!

Inequality is awful. All of those paychecks need to be redistributed for the good of the country.

Stock buybacks, options etc. “For the love of it”. Seriously? There are more VC’s, CPA’s and lawyers in Silicon Valley than the rest of the country put together

    #342 5 years ago
    Quoted from o-din:

I try to set it up so I owe them or they owe me less than $100 each year. That way they aren't earning interest on my money and I have it to spend, and I don't owe them a big chunk of change all at once.

You ain’t no dummy Odiner. Simple math right?

We need to max out our beer $$$

    #345 5 years ago

We could solve SS by taking all of Apples cash horde and all publicly traded company profits until the debt is paid off and entitlements are in good shape?

Or, like this Amazon tax, let’s just raise the sales tax on a national basis for all the transactions

And add another layer of tax on top of that for luxury items so the rich really get F ed

    #370 5 years ago
    Quoted from o-din:

    One last thing though.
This is the first time any of my posts have been highlighted as being important. I feel like a proud papa!

    You da man Odiner!

Now it’s time for some pizza, beer and pinball. F taxes

And get ready for long awaited Sicario2

    #374 5 years ago
    Quoted from Who-Dey:

Id sure like to have a pizza right now but im trying to save up for IMDN and The Munsters. Ever since they announced this tax thing ive had to eat soup beans and baloney sandwiches ever since!

Man I used to love baloney sandwiches as a kid!

Btw, thx for the warning Tiger, I don’t like to get the bouncing email at the top of the page

Especially after a night of drunk posting. Wake up the next day and see that thing bouncing and it’s like uh oh, what happened
