Paging electrical gurus. I recently noticed while playing a game on my Flip a Card that the red ‘100 points when lit’ middle pop bumper light wasn’t coming on at all, although it was scoring and chiming correctly.

Put a new 47 bulb in and no change. Lifted the playfield and sure enough the wire from the 10 watt 10 ohm resistor that I put in last fall had come loose from the double black wire. I resoldered it and the middle pop bumper light came on and off like it should but the light, as you can see from the pics was much brighter than any other bulbs on the playfield and they’re all 47s. So much so that the new bulb didn’t last 2 days.

One last thing. The 10 watt 75ohm resistor on the left that is tied in to the 10 watt 10 on resistor seems pretty hot during gameplay. Not sure if that’s normal.

I’m turning the machine off until I find the issue.

Thanks for any help.
Danny

Just for reference, the above picture of the resistor was taken right before I resoldered it back.

Quoted from MarkG:

What's the 10 ohm resistor for? The schematic shows that the red pop bumper bulb socket should have a 75 ohm 10 watt resistor between it and the black wire.
The resistor is necessary to drop the voltage across the bulb from 25 volts to the 6 volts it wants since the bulb is in the 25 volt circuit and not in the 6 volt illumination circuit. It was cheaper to add a resistor than to replicate the circuit that drives it in the 6 volt circuit.
If you unplug the game and remove the pop bumper bulb what's the resistance between the black wire and the bulb socket where the resistor attaches to it?

Mark. That’s the way the machine came when I bought it last July. I replaced the old resistors the way it was wired with newer ones from Mouser and it all was fine until the other day.

I’ll be following your directions tomorrow. Thanks buddy.

Well, I never got to use MarkG’s testing advice because gdonovan and flipit nailed my mistake. I misspoke in saying I had 47s installed throughout the playfield. That’s what I put in my Aladdin’s Castle but I now remember in January putting all new 44s on the Flip a Card, including the 3 Pops.

What happened was that when the resistor wire became loose, I first checked the bulb and replaced it with a new 47, thinking that’s what I had everywhere instead of the 44s. Put in a new 44 and problem solved.

Here’s a pic of the factory resistors I replaced. Thanks to all 3 of you for the help.
