When you hit the flipper button and sometimes the flipper stays up until you hit the flipper button a couple times.... What is your guess of what the issue is? Flipper coil sleeve? Thanks!

#2 11 years ago

Check the sleeve.
Check the coil stop.
Check to make sure the coil is still secured in position by it's screws.

What game we talking about?

Rawley's right.
If the mounting screws are ok, then take out the coil, and clean the parts. A lot dirt can stuck between the iron, and the sleeve...
But mostly the screws are loosy. First try to move it manually, you will feel, where it stucks.

Wow there is just not enough information to start gunning out solutions. No one is "right" yet lol. First things first. Need to determine if it's electrical or if its mechanical. When the flipper is stuck up, if you power off the machine, does the flipper stay up or drop down? If stay up, it's mechanical. If drop down, it's electrical. You can start with a flipper rebuild (search for vid's flipper rebuild guide here) if it's mechanical. If it's electrical, time to start investigating some board issue. GnR uses a flipper board in the bottom left of the cabinet. You can look into repairing it or possibly just buying a new one since they're cheap.

There's nothing wrong with my advice bro. The flipper is stuck until you hit some other coils a few times to unjam it. sure sounds mechanical to me

No. investigate the parts first (EOS switches, coil stops, sleeves, etc), before any ordering of ANYTHING is done in my opinion.

A little investigative work of the moving parts is not "gunning out solutions"..

I'm surprised nobody mention the flipper return spring. Designed to return the flipper back to it's starting position, can be overlooked when missing or broken.

I'll throw my 2c worth in and say that sometimes the solution can be VERY simple .

GoBlue when you push the flipper button and the flipper stays up is the flipper button coming back out ??

Sometimes the actual flipper button can get gummed up a bit and stick when it's pushed in .

Thank you for the response. It appears to be a mechanical problem. If the flipper is stuck up and the power is cut, it remains up.

Thank you for the response. I checked out the spring and it seems okay.

Thank you for the response, the flipper button is working properly.

I am going to do some more investigating tonight. It does seem that the flipper mechanisms are a little bit closer to the playfield than the other flipper that is working flawlessly. It also has a little more "play" when moving the arm around. Could it be the flipper bushing? It is hard to tell why it is getting a little bit stuck... I already have coil sleeves on hand, but I am also thinking about buying flipper rebuild kit to have extra parts on hand for this issue and future flipper issues since this machine is a keep for me anyway. What do you guys think?

#13 11 years ago

Extra parts are a necessity regardless, if you intend to work on your own machines.

Sorry, but until you determine if the problem is electrical / mechanical, you should not be disassembling coils. You can suspect it's mechanical, but a simple test to verify is the next step, not diving into disassembly. (That's gunning a solution).

If the flipper has any mechanical issue, it needs a full rebuild. You can fix the problem and get it working and save a few cents, but if one part has worn out already, it's time for a rebuild. Flippers can be fixed as you say above, or they can be right for a few cents more.

True, but we didnt even know yet at this point if it was mechanical vs electrical.
