I'm working on a neighbor's 1973 Bally Sky Kings. I've done quite a bit of work on SS machines but haven't worked much on EM's.

I've run into two issues so far that I can't get a handle on.

1 - At start up, the solenoid coil for the bonus stepper activates and sticks (photo #1).

2 - When the spinner is activated, the spinner relay coil (photo #2) sticks as does the associated solenoid coil on the spinner unit assembly. I'm assuming/guessing the relay coil is the culprit here judging by the condition of the coil wrappers.

Thanks in advance to any help you can provide.

Regarding #1, have you serviced/lubricated the bonus unit? It's possible the game's trying to reset the bonus to zero as part of it's start-up routine and the arms are gummed up/stuck so the coil can't move them, which means the zero position switch isn't closing, which isn't allowing the game to fully reset.

If you clean it well with alcohol, including the coil plungers and coil sleeves, and then use one tiny drop of 3 oil on the lone joint where the two metal arms come together, that might help it along.

Not sure on #2, as I'm not familiar with that game.

there shud be an EOS switch on the spin unit that releases the spin coil, guessing here, dont have that pin.
They stick on because the relays have a SELF HOLD switch, and another switch breaks the signal, releasing the relay coil.
try manually closing the spin relay with your finger, does it lock on? then step the spin unit up manually, and see if the relay coil releases.
guessing you need to go through that pin, and tighten switch stacks, clean/adjust switches as needed, and clean/lube all the step units.
then your problems might go away...
your gonna wanna swap out those burnt coils.

Probably should have informed initially that I have played with the spinner playfield switch. The coils (relay & solenoid) still stay energized.

10-4 on replacing the coils. I want to get the problems fixed before I install and fry new ones.

I have not yet serviced the bonus stepper. However, it moves freely and resets on initial startup.

Hi Pindufus
I would like to have a look at problem-1. ipdb.org does not have a schema - they say "Champ" is similar -> I look in the schema (Champ) -> Bonus-Unit-Step-UP-solenoid is shown at F-5.
I see: When the pin does reset: The Reset-Relay is pulling -> a Switch (F-4) on this relay is OPEN -> the Bonus-UP-solenoid can NOT fire.
When the Reset-Relay quits pulling (closing that switch) -> switches J-5 / H-5 let the Step-UP Coil fire: Outhole-Relay / Bonus-Advance-Relay / Score-Motor-7C / Bonus-ZERO-RELAY.
(((I do not understand the drawing of Switch on Bonus-Zero-Relay - I would like to see there a Normally-OPEN-Switch (???) )))

Also in that area are the Coils of Outhole-Relay / Bonus-Score-Relay / Bonus-Zero-Relay / Bonus-UNIT-ZERO-Switch.
Do You have a schema ? Want to study that area / these relays and units ? A relay is faulty / a switch on a relay / unit is faulty - WHAT keeps Your Bonus-UP-Coil pulling ?
Greetings Rolf
