Just looked at mine, mine is also on a slight angle towards the player position as is yours. The bottom of the spinner when vertical is approx 21mm (just under an inch) above the play field. Mine does have a diode and is reasonably easy to spin.

How hard is it to move the leaf on the microswitch, if you lift the leaf and then spin the spinner does it move freely. The spinner block is quite heavy and takes a bit to move but that way it should retain inertia after the ball has passed.

I would also look at the spinner shaft, is it straight is it coming close to leaving the bracket at the non switch end and binding, is the leaf staying in the correct bent section of the spinner shaft or "riding high" and making it harder for the spinner to move that way.
