Since my STTNG is down while I wait for the new cannon linkage arm, I decided to pull the subway and clean it. Gross. Getting it off was quick. Cleaning is taking forever because I couldn't possibly begin to guess when this was last cleaned...never?

Is it safe to power on with the subway, right subway VUK, and corresponding connnectors disconnected? I'm sure that sounds absurdly cautious, but given the tie back situation on this game, I just wanted to be sure before I just trying and potentially blowing something. I want to test some LED insert replacements before I put the subway back on.

Thanks

Follow up: I kept the coin door open and nothing blew up. I guess it's safe

Quoted from Pin_Guy:

oooh....the small one is a PITA to replace. This is the one that connects directly to gearbox shaft and is held in place with a retention pin...the pin is very difficult to remove, I broke 2 punches trying to remove one

My game is back up and running. No kidding that was a tough pin. It wasn't a treat to get to the cannon motor, either.

Turns out my sling plastic had shifted and was binding the cannon (pinned above the left wireform return). I might have snapped the new shaft too, if not for the forethought to not screw the new and old shafts together until I watched them run through once. The long arm kept popping out and I couldn't figure out what was wrong. Then I noticed the cannons range of motion was all wrong. Yikes.

Anyway, thanks again!

I had a problem with my left canon this week. It would no longer move, but I could move it with my hand. I could hear the motor whirling, but I was afraid the motor broke or something.
Thankfully, it was just a loose screw on the underside!
So, if this happens to you, it's an easy fix.

I have two issues I'm hoping y'all can help me out with:

1. My digital screen is starting to get "staticky". See picture. Anyone know of a way to fix this?
2. When my score reaches 10 billion it tends to drop the 10s digit... not just in site, but in mind, too! I reached 12B which should have been a new record, but it read it as 2B. Any thoughts?

Thanks everyone!

On the score, that's a known issue with STTNG. It can't keep track of the numbers that high while playing (not that I've ever had that problem) and I believe scores above 10 billion go to the Q Continuum list, rather than the regular high scores. See if it registered there.

Found this: The real STTNG has multiple issues with high scores. For one thing, scores over ten billion are well within the realm of possibility, but the score when shown in game doesn't show the ten-billions digit, so players may think their score has reset. the game DOES keep track of the score properly, though. when it displays the Grand Champion score during attract mode, it shows the full, correct score (which on mine is about 22 billion). However, there are other problems: there are four different high score lists -- there's the Grand Champion, the Honor Roll (for players with no buy-ins), Officer's Club (for one or more buy-ins), and Q Continuum (for scores above ten billion, with any number of buy-ins). Unfortunately, scores over 10 billion are ignored completely by the Honor Roll and Officer's Club, and will only register on either the Q Continuum or for Grand Champion.

Thanks Strohz! I have to say that I HAVE noticed that it saves some high scores over 10B. Maybe it's just because I filled up one of the high score lists that I didn't see this last get added. But I swear I have seen it keep a 10B or higher score before on the display as I play the game. Maybe I'm just wrong. Thanks though!

Well, this is odd: I have an error in my service mode messages to check: switch left upper flipper button, F8

We don't have such a flipper on STTNG, and the manual shows F8 is unused.

Any ideas? I'm on ROM LX-5, if it helps.

Thanks

Anyone have a random reboot issue on their STTNG but only during multi-balls? Everything seems fine otherwise. Sometimes multi-balls are fine but sometimes not.

Generally, it's the opto board dirty, at the left flipper button.

(semi-related topic... the spinner runs thru the in-used Fliptronics input, in place of that 4th upper left flipper)

Yes it's been done... but I personally think my product is better (so you don't have to look at the bulbs) at all. You can find more detail in this thread:
https://pinside.com/pinball/forum/topic/stng-wingled-kit
BUT, you'd have to upgrade yours to the halmark version. ;D

This is a fantastic mod, and the Hallmark Klingon bird of Prey is a relatively inexpensive, well painted and nicely detailed model.

Get Zitt's light boards with white LEDs. I picked a different color, and my only regret is that they could have been brighter had I chosen the white.

The problem is once you swap out the Bird of Prey, you'll notice just how cheap the Romulan Warbird looks... Hallmark has you covered there, too.

Agreed! It challenges your soldering skills but looks great once its done!

Yes, but I understand this mod is much more difficult than the BoP. I have the ornament but haven't tackled the mod yet.

Lighting the Romulan ship scared me, too. I just took a circular saw to my Hallmark ship, swapped it for the one that was there, and called that good enough. It looks much better.

Have you tried turning up the brightness knobs under the wings? There are two tiny variable resistors that should allow you to blind yourself.

Quoted from Hammerhead:

If that is a challenge... then DO NOT try the DEST Enterprise mod.
I honestly never considered the STNG WingLed mod to be complex... but I guess it is if you don't feel comfortable with a soldering iron to begin with.

Quoted from Mocean:

I have a Romulan BOP pre-modded in box... for years... and I haven't installed it.
I'm still trying to decide how I want to do mine... and, IF I want to do something special.

I think it's time to go pull mine out of the box and see what the original modder did.

Quoted from Mocean:

The Hallmark ship is only scary because there is so much unknown about the mod, but once you know whats going on its fairly simple.

Myth: There is a circuit board in the ship that's needed for it to operate.
Fact: All the circuit board does is convert 120V AC to DC for the two zener diodes to "regulate" the voltage to around 6.5 volts. Since we already have a 6 volt GI circuit we dont need any of this for it to work as the ship contains 4 incandescent bulbs and they could care less if the voltage is AC or DC for them to glow, as long as its around 6V.

Well heck, I guess that's all there is to it. Of course I've been known to back up what I say with pictures so I won't disappoint.

I was once in the dark with this board as well so I cracked open a Romulan Ship to see what I was dealing with...that's when I found the spider! Okay, not a real spider but this little board with its 8 yellow wires just looks like a spider.

901 (resized).JPG901 (resized).JPG
903 (resized).JPG903 (resized).JPG

Each one of the Zeners in the picture above control one side of the lights and are wired in series in order to reduce the overall current draw.

I would like to strongly discourage taking one apart like this as it is absolutely the hardest way to mod this AND you will chip paint around the warp nacelles which light will shine through and make it look bad.

The best way to do this is to just pull out your drill with a 1-1/4"/32mm hole saw and cut all the way through the bottom layer of plastic, then STOP! The reason you stop when you are through is to minimize damage to the wires, if you go too deep you will start damaging insulation, making more work for yourself. If you drill this perfectly, ALL of the wires will still be connected to the board and you can just cut them off, or desolder them if you prefer.
937 (resized).JPG937 (resized).JPG

After the board is out of the way, tuck all of the wires inside the ship then get your drill back out and cut through the top layer of plastic; since you already have 2 guide holes this is a simple cut, you only have to worry about going too deep and scratching the underside of the top portion of the ship in a place no one can see.

Just take all of the wires, solder them into a single 4 lamp series circuit and call it done. I used heat shrink over every connection and installed a 2 pin molex connector in place of the original tree lighting socket and called it done!
958 (resized).JPG958 (resized).JPG

All thats left is to wire it to any GI socket you see fit, if you made it this far no explanation is necessary. I hot glued mine down to the flasher cover, but realistically the ship never moved while I was game testing it, so its up to you what you want to do here. I cannot fall off as there is no room for it clear the flasher with the glass on, but it may fall if you raise the playfield and don't have it glued down.

Announcing a soft launch of a new product I've been working on for a few months... I finally got a product I was happy with so I'm making them available to all Star Trek pinball owners.

This product originally started as an embellishment for the Data East Star Trek machines to go on top of the "Red Alert" flashers:
Condition: Red (Alert)Condition: Red (Alert)
This Data East kit comes with 4 "Red Alert" Decals for 7.49USD w/ free shipping if ordered alone:
Data East (example install)Data East (example install)
Data East (incandescent flasher bulb)Data East (incandescent flasher bulb)

I then realized the kits could be expanded to the Williams Star Trek: The Next Generation.
On the STNG; the kit only comes with a single Red Alert decal for the beta ramp; so is considerably cheaper at 2.49USD.

These are in stock now and available for immediate shipping.

Quoted from Hammerhead:

Of course, that's the picture you left out.

Ok so the wires, each bulb has 2 and there are 2 power wires (of course) inside, the 2 power wires have a knot tied in them so they cant pull out, but you can always press these deeper into the ship to make connections easier. You do have to be careful how much force you put on the lamp wires as they can break off the lamp if you aren't careful; before you start, its a good idea to measure the 2 wires to each lamp, they should read around 3.8 ohms.

The first thing I did was add a small jumper wire to the top left light, this is the one furthest away from the power connector, this wire will make it much easier to bridge the gap between the 2 halves; once that was in place I soldered one wire from each of the lamps on one right side of the ship together.

DSC00528 (resized).JPGDSC00528 (resized).JPG

The first wire was tucked away inside the ship, then I soldered the jumper I added earlier to the upper right light to connect the lights on both sides together
DSC00530 (resized).JPGDSC00530 (resized).JPG

As you can see each wire is tucked away after its soldered, the next wire was connecting the 2 lights on the right side. At this point all I have left is two wires, lower right and lower left. These will be connected to the ships power wires.

DSC00531 (resized).JPGDSC00531 (resized).JPG

Just solder each one to one of the power wires.
DSC00532 (resized).JPGDSC00532 (resized).JPG

Then tuck them away inside the ship.
DSC00537 (resized).JPGDSC00537 (resized).JPG

Good luck!

Added over 6 years ago:

EDIT: FURTHER INVESTIGATION INTO HOW I WIRED THIS REVEALED THAT I ACTUALLY ONLY WIRED THE 2 LIGHS ON EACH SIDE IN SERIES WITH EACH OTHER AND WIRED THE 2 PAIRS IN PARALLEL. THIS IS HOW THE ORIGINAL BOARD WIRING WOULD HAVE BEEN AND RESULTS IN THE SHIPS LIGHTING HAVING THE PROPER BRIGHTNESS.

IT IS MUCH MORE DIFFICULT TO WIRE THIS WAY AS EACH OF THE GREEN POWER WIRES WILL HAVE 3 WIRES SOLDERED TOGETHER.

#2398 5 years ago

I have another Hallmark ship I can work on and post new pictures of the wiring changes needed to produce optimal lighting.

#2399 5 years ago
Quoted from Zitt:

Have you tried turning up the brightness knobs under the wings? There are two tiny variable resistors that should allow you to blind yourself.

Yeah, okay... So this is embarrassing... At some point after I installed the mod, F103 blew. No wonder it seemed darker than I remembered!

#2400 5 years ago

I'm waiting for Tuesday to deliver some smt parts for my rendition of the wingleds for romulan bird of prey. I'd like to thank pinguy for giving me the incentive to look at the "pre-modded" Romulan ship I bought from another vendor... I took one look and knew it wouldn't work. Those bone strokes drilled holes in the back of the wing and the nacelles to wire in what looks like a single LED then put green heatshrink around it to "cover" the damage.

I designed a new circuit to replace the two incandescent bulbs with green leds and added a place for a center white led sorta like this picture:
https://goo.gl/images/EBzV6w

I'll post pictures later when I verify functionality.
