Interesting theory and the balls probably do move a little, but they should never be permanently knocked out of place as gravity should always bring it back.

I have been assuming that this "upper trough" you are referring to is the upper left VUK but none of the VUKs have any V notches, can you take a picture of this upper trough to help clear up the confusions as I'm wondering if you have some hack tossed in there to use a ball trough in place of a VUK assembly.
