The coil "Depth" is adjustable. I had the same problem on my left one, dropped it down about 1/8" and it solved it. You'll find two screws on the lower part of the coil, just loosen those and adjust.

See my picture below. This is the right side cannon VUK assembly. Those two nuts? Loosen those and the coil assembly will slide up or down. The way this one is right now is factory as far as I know. My left one, I dropped the coil all the way down by loosening those two nuts and it fixed the problem. Hope this helps.

I see what you are saying. I went and looked at the one I adjusted and noticed how loose the coil is now. Maybe a shim could be made to snug it up? Not sure. But, I will say the adjustment fixed the problem of the VUK being too powerful. Short term I haven't had any adverse effects, but the game is currently being shopped and it didn't get played much after I made the adjustment. So I can't say what the long term effect might have.
