This will be to document a ST:TNG that was delivered for me to work on. This is my first STTNG I've worked on and know it will be a challenge. I will be bulletproofing electrically and mechanically which will include getting all the boards serviced, take the playfield down to bare wood, clean up all parts and replace anything that's needed: including plastics, ramps, subway, rails, usual things that you'd do if you took a game down to refresh the game to this level. He plans to have it fully modded so it will need to be able to support all the extra load of them.

We believe we're going with a new playfield with Ron Kruzman's clear work. It will also get a Pinsound board, sound system, and mirror blades. LED's where there wasn't already, new translite, Pinball-Mods pop bumper parts, ColorDMD, Mantis subway protector and playfield supports, Titan rings, new opto board, and more.

Already addressed the playfield pivot hinge system bolts (NJNeil already had new parts for it!) as they were really gummed up and the old support rails were bent. Working on a list of some things we need to fix as I being tearing down. New convoluted tubing will be replacing the brittle and broken ones. Will address parts on the cabinet, but I won't be doing any cabinet work for decals. I know my limits!

The rear upper diverter was gummed up along with the upper flipper. The ball trough boards have an error too. All of this will be cleaned and/or replaced but it plays just fine as it is.

Preparing to Engage!

Here's some pre-tear down photos of the playfield and support rails. I plan to start fully tearing it down this week...

This is gonna be awesome.. .wish I had the space you have to work on such things!

#4 1 year ago

Solid basis for a resto candidate, that playfield is actually in much better shape than many others out there. That playfield service support rail...wow...would like to know what happened there!!

#5 1 year ago

That doesn't look bad at all cosmetically where it counts.

Following.

Top side tear down part 1. Note the gummed up diverter. It's just gummed up and returns after 5 minutes. New coil sleeves and cleaning should fix it.

Here's a few issues that need handled:

New pop bumper brackets will be installed as shown by the one bent.

The bracket for the under playfield diverters was MIG'd. Will have to get that TIG'd unless I can find someone that has one. Nothing has turned up anywhere.

Broken subway so will replace.

The previously mentioned playfield support brackets which we already have to install.

Updated ColorDMD firmware for STTNG and tested first in my HS2. All good! Moved it to the STTNG with same results. One of many, many steps done. This is running LX-7.

Back box is being stripped down. It’s getting new decals. Currently it has decals that were just put in on top of the old. No prep.

Boards will be gone over so all removed.

Will you be going stock or be putting in mods when you reassemble?
I've always wondered what the translucent skirts and bodies would look like in STNG.
Sadily; when I installed my popcaps - I didn't have stock of any translucent switch skirts.

#18 1 year ago

Actually your clear bodies and wasn’t sure yet on skirts. That does sound really good with clear skirts.

#19 1 year ago

Everything finally made it into my house. Off with ye head! The back box decals weren’t really nicely installed is the politest way to put it. New ones are in the way so will take care of the dents and dings.

What’s puzzling is that you can peel them off and the art doesn’t look bad from what can be seen. Didn’t even line up to the original. The rest of the bottom cabinet art looks good. Going to clean up coin door with some paint, fix the broken plastic parts on it, and install a new button assembly.

Why spend all that money on new cabinet art; then half arse the install?
Perplexing. Glad this game is getting a deserved restore.

Thanks for the tie back info. Artwork if you’re asking about me doing: I don’t do restores, just playfield swaps. The backbox art is a favor replacing the not so good job. If you’re asking about the existing, yeah no clue!

Mounted the playfield on the rotisserie. You’ll have to remove a few things to make it an easy drop.

For the upper playfield: I pulled the rear back panel, few light sockets, the drop target and rear diverter assembly.

Lower playfield: the playfield hanging brackets and the ball trough.

Cabinet/coin door is apart and being cleaned. The coin door was repainted poorly which made clean up easy.

Old interior side decals removed. If anyone wants them, well... lol! He has new mirror blades to replace them with which will go on after the playfield swap. For now I have time to get the cabinet-related cleaned up.

Ultrasonic’ing anything I can before cleaning, tumbling, and/or painting.

I'm excited to follow along! I just recently joined the hobby - and procured a pretty nice ST:TNG machine myself about a month ago - have been playing it and learning about it from all the knowledgeable folks on here. Mine only needs some minor fixes/cleaning which is great to ease me into all of this. Will probably start a small thread to document my progress as well, and hopefully help someone out that is new like me.

Coin door has been reinstalled after cleaning and some paint. It needed some new coinage labeling and some apart new coin door parts I have floating around. Need to order and install new test button assembly.

New rear wide body glass trim came this week to replace the existing damaged one. Found the screw holes have split the wood (common) so glued it up while there.

Cabinet wiring, cable management, and hardware is being cleaned. Tilt bob and coin board already cleaned. Will be installing new switches and a blue start button. Pics mixed from before tear down and during.

Back cabinet lighting wiring lost its stickiness so have went with cable clips to keep it up.

Onto the back box. It was like a roof that was shingled twice. Top decal came off easy. It was the silkscreened original decals that we’re a PITA.

Was able to save much of the left side “top” decal.

Mech assemblies part 1. The drop target bracket has been repaired before so it will be getting replaced. So far one broken AE-26-1200 coil also to be replaced.

The single drop reset was a custom repair job. Was working fine so will get a new one as well.

Pop bumper mechs will have little reused. Ring and rod, yokes, brackets and even most screws (many are stripped) are begging replaced. The one bracket was actually bent.

Tumbling and ultrasonic daily!

The lockdown bar was cleaned in Evaporust, rinsed, and dried. I used the Titan lockdown bar receiver decal that Neil sent with his machine. I really like this all in one decal. The brass screws were tumbled and like like new now.
