I've been helping someone out with an AFM off and on.

The only thing not working on the game right now is the strobe.

First, I replaced the caps. The strobe flashed twice and that was it.

I verified that there is continuity for the wiring from the strobe PCB to the driver board PCB. Voltage to the board appears to be good.

Then I replaced strobe tube, trigger, U1, and Q1. All the diodes tested good (and were oriented correctly), and I replaced D7 just in case. However, the strobe still does not flash.

Are there any other common points of failure?

I recommend you dial down the heat on your soldering iron. Looks like the board is getting melted.

That's just flux. I haven't cleaned it off yet.

There is a connector near the strobe lamp board. Mine tested good continuity. Eventually pulled that connector apart as I had run out of ideas. The pins and receptacles were badly blackened. Invisible from outside. Worth a look or just replacing if that is the sort of thing that happens to it over time?

The IDC connector that connects to the strobe board itself, or one of the 4-pin connectors that further in on the playfield?

No. 17 cable was the issue with mine.

Ah, I'll be sure to take a look at it--thanks

Well, I finally got around to repinning the connectors on the white cable (going between the strobe board and saucer strobe) and the cable from the wiring harness to the strobe board. There is continuity across both cables.

I'm not sure what else is left.

Ok, trying to tackle this long standing problem again.

The board is free of flux.

The led is lit.

141.5vdc across c3 & c4
141.7vdc across c1
70.8vdc across c2

66.7vdc across the top 2 pins of the triac.

Shorting the top 2 pins on the triac does not fire the strobe lamp.

Shorting pins 4 & 6 on the opto does not fire the strobe.

Does this mean the trigger transformer is bad?

I soldered the original strobe to the PCB to see if that revealed anything, but the strobe never lit.

I removed the pinbits trigger transformer and replaced it with the original trigger tranformer, but there was no change, and the strobe (both new and old) did not light.

See if you can connect with Martin at Pinbits—he may know what to do, or at least what to test/try.
