I know in 80 williams went to a stronger better coil that's a larger coil..
Is there a easy solution to making a 79 flash have stronger flippers?

#2 7 years ago

Put wpc flippers in it,many have done this to Flash and it will be a whole new experience. Look up Vid's guide to rebuilding flippers, great reading.

You want to purchase these complete System 11 flipper assemblies:

http://www.pinballlife.com/index.php?p=product&id=717

Be sure to select:

Side: Left or right

Coil: SFL 19-400/30-750 DC (this operates on 24 volts and is the large size coil)

Coil Stop: A-10821

Each complete flipper assembly is part number C-13174-R (right) and C-13174-L (left). They are $42.95 each and include the spark suppressing capacitor already installed and wired to the end of stroke switch. The flipper bats are NOT included in the assembly have also need to be ordered. White bats are suggested for Flash.

All of this is right except I think you want this full assembly instead:
http://www.pinballlife.com/index.php?p=product&id=172

Note that you need a normally closed EOS switch and you need a second switch for the right flipper. You can reuse your existing switch or order it from Marco: ASW-A10-45 (Pinball life doesn't carry it, last time I checked).

I have a Flash and did this upgrade. I highly recommend it.

Your thread title says stringer , not stronger. Might want to edit that.

#9 7 years ago

Use the assembly I recommended. It's what I've used on older Williams machines as an upgrade. It comes with the normally closed high current EOS switch and the capacitor already installed. If a lane change switch is needed too, order this switch:

@kenlayton, I was going to ask why add the cap when it wasn't originally there but I see you answered that in Vid's rebuild thread:

Quoted from KenLayton:

That vintage does not require the EOS capacitor, but installing it does reduce the sparking considerably and extend the life of the EOS switch.

I am looking at this option for a Flash and maybe a Gorgar later.
The Flash unit has a four leaf switch for the right flipper, add the same lane change switch mentioned earlier ?
Did the three original nylon bushing screws get in the way of the new assembly or did you cut them down ?

Thx.

You have to remove the screws for this bracket to fit. They aren't needed with the newer style bushings which fit this bracket.

I don't have a Flash in front of me so I don't remember what that particular switch looked like. A picture perhaps would help?

Absolutely the three original fin shank nails which held the original flipper nylon bushing must be removed or cut. I used a Dremel with a cutoff wheel to chop off those screws flush.

Flash doesn't have lane change but it has 2 flippers on the right so you need a dual EOS switch.
Gorgar is easy also no lane change and only 2 flippers.

OK I ordered the assembly s left and right you recomended.. anythI guess I need to know upon instal or pretty straight forward ?

#22 7 years ago

Just be sure to transfer the correct wires to the correct wires on the coil.

#23 7 years ago

I`ve been procrastinating on ordering these for my Flash and Blackout for years, finally pushed me over the edge. Thanks Ken.

THIS is actually the flipper assembly you want, because it does not use a compression spring:

http://www.pinballlife.com/index.php?p=product&id=172

Compression springs suck, constantly break, and then chew up the coil plunger.

Email Terry and tell him you need the EOS Switch substituted with this one:

http://www.pinballlife.com/index.php?p=product&id=262

And have him substitute the coil for this one:

http://www.pinballlife.com/index.php?p=product&id=154

Vid1900, one of the links you listed is a duplicate.
Can you update the EOS switch link?
Since this is about a Flash machine that has three flippers, the left and top right flipper will use a standard EOS.
What will the bottom right flipper need? That flipper has a dual switch setup.

Thanks.

Keep the 1/2 of the switch that is not the EOS, and reuse it.

If it's worn out, then this is probably a workable substitute :

Rotating boards around I have noticed the 100uF cap across the 25v circuit on the power supply can sap a few volts if its failing which reduces power to all coils including flippers. See if your 25v is low.

Just throwing that out there.

I did the conversion per Vid1900's specs and the results are good.

Installation was fairly straight forward.
The lower left was a drop in.
The lower right did need the old EOS disassembled to reuse part of switch the on the new flipper units EOS.
The lower right required the my tilt switch to be moved about an inch, no new wiring required.
I put a rebuild kit in the upper right as I had one kit already.

It does change the feel of the game. I went from a noticeably under powered set of flippers to a noticeably over powered set of flippers.
The new flippers do make the game slightly easier but the old ones were just unplayable.

My next rebuild will be a Gorgar and I will do the conversion on that game as well.

Thanks for the great discussion.

#29 7 years ago

Remember if you need to lower the power of the new flippers, simply open up the EOS gap a tiny bit.

Make the flippers match the game - like when the upper flipper is breaking drop targets, tame it down by opening up the EOS.

Followed Vids guide and upgraded my Gorgar best thing ever! Never seen the need on flash standard flippers are plenty strong.
