Still waiting for when a cheap one of these shows up. Project or not.

It’s a neat little game! I could never justify some of the crazy prices I’ve seen for them.

Quoted from Stebel:

I am in the club! Cabinet is really nice shape. Playfield has some wear so I be looking for a new one of those.
I have some display issues to fix. Need a manual though.
No PDF anywhere to be found. If anyone has one please let me know.

Gottlieb copyrights are still enforced by the family, you’ll have to buy a manual from Steve at PBR.

Doesn’t someone sell custom balls for this game? I just picked one up that had rusty balls which caused a lot of playfield wear. I’d like to buy new custom balls for it. I thought I’ve seen them before

Quoted from ThePinballJoint:

can anyone help me with a manual for strikes n spares. i acquired a very nice one but has some wiring issues that need addressed.

He’s the official licensee for Gottlieb materials. pbresource.com

Quoted from ToucanF16:

What's the latest ROM on this game?

Any consensus? I just talked to Steve and he said “it should say L5” but my game says “/6”
For the ROM. Looking for some guidance.
Also what menu option is free play? I didn’t find it anywhere but some people are saying they found a Freeplay option? Someone said tournament mode is freeplay?

Can reach an agreement?

Quoted from RC_like_the_cola:

That does seem to be the case. I thought I read somewhere in here that another pinsider's game wouldn't allow a cradle. Glad to know mine is fine, though.

I believe in the manual that you’re not supposed to be able to cradle it. I’d have to ask Steve Young, he remembers it fondly. I have my setup to allow cradles because why not? Lol

Can anyone recommend how to fix the issue of the kicker not being able to kick balls into the return lanes? It struggles greatly if there’s more than one ball in the back.
I’ll rebuilt it but it looks good right now. It’s nice and clean, hard to imagine the rebuilt will fix this issue

What’s the latest code it’s supposed to show? I believe mine is L114

Quoted from shirkle:

After debating buying this for years…literally years…I finally splurged and bought a NOS playfield. Seems a little silly for this game, but I’ll probably clear coat it before installing.

Where?! I could use one

I was giving my SnS a deep clean since it’s been on location it’s entire life and was filthy.

However, I made a big oopsie. Forgot to take pictures of the apron and which bolts/spacers go on the playfield underneath it, and how it is supported.

Anyone have good pictures of a tear down of their SnS for reference?

Since none of you schmucks were of help, I’m giving back and posting photos of my shop job. I polished everything by hand and waxed the playfield. I spend hours polishing it and it looks great. The worn areas are too bad, maybe one day a NOS playfield will cross my path.468ED265-ACE9-4CFB-8744-D188C6DDC5A9.jpeg468ED265-ACE9-4CFB-8744-D188C6DDC5A9.jpeg

Quoted from Happy81724:

It feels like the right side both flipper and kick out coil is weak. The kick out won’t always get the ball all the way out. The left side kicks out quick and flipper is strong. Coils are the same. Is there a good place to start?[quoted image][quoted image]

Double check that the ball isn’t kicking out so hard that it’s bouncing right back down. That was happening to me. If it’s not kicking out, the spring needs to be changed. Gottlieb had a service bulletin about this. The spring is too strong.

Weird issue at the arcade today.
The right diverter plunger kept firing over and over persistently once or twice a minute. Not sure how long it had been running. The coil was VERY hot, but not too hot that I couldn’t hold me hand on it.

The opto tests fine, and after power cycling the game twice it stopped.

Any clue what might be the cause? This is on every day for 15 hours, 7 days a week. I need to ensure this issue is solved and doesn’t occur again!

Background info: When I got this game that coil had already been replaced and was installed backwards, so this has clearly happened before. I’ve had the game for over a year now and this so the first time it’s happened with me.

Quoted from SNES:

Did you ever figure this out? Mine does this every now and then

Not yet, I cleaned the optos and the problem has yet to return. Strikes N’ Spares is such a great game, I think about selling it sometimes. Then I play it again and realize how much fun it is.

Quoted from SNES:

I cleaned all the optos and thought I was good as well, but recently the issue has come up again. Please let me know if you come up with something if your issue comes back. Hopefully you’re in the clear though!
I love this game as well. It is the most played game at every party I have and people always feel like they can approach the familiarity of bowling. So simple, but so fun!

Maybe a cold solder joint? Trace the opto back to the MPU. Perhaps it’s a stray ground. Hard to say!

Digging this thread out of the grave. Joined the club today. Pickup next week.

Nice!!! Love mine. It’s simple and repetitive, but then again, so it bowling. I enjoy it for what it is! Mine is out on location right across from a head shop and those guys come over and play it every night before they head home

Quoted from jrcmlc:

10-4 I guess there's a ridge or something different on those rubbers other than the normal ones I keep around ?

I see you don’t own any other Gottliebs. Gottlieb uses a custom 1/2 inch thick rubber for the flippers. It’s Gottlieb flipper rubber, basically. Everyone carries it. I cringe when I go to a collectors house and they have the standard rubber on their games, and it just destroys the damn flipper area.

Saw a rich asshole collector guy who unboxed a Strikes ‘N Spares, BRAND NEW, put standard rubber on the flippers and destroyed his playfield within 4 months. It was so sad and disgusting. He didn’t care.

Gottlieb flippers have a very narrow groove for the rubber to sit in. Oversized rubber or rubber that isn’t seated properly causes the ball to dig into the playfield, kinda like those tricks were you pinch a bottle cap and send it flying. But instead of pinching with your fingers it’s the delicate wood of the playfield and a steel ball.

Quoted from jrcmlc:

I was just eyeballing pbl website to add some to my cart so I didn't forget, will double check its correct but def. Understand to not use regular. Appreciate the reminder.

Just a friendly reminder, most people just don’t know! It’s weird Gottlieb had to be different. But especially considering how beautiful your game is, you want to keep it looking mint for as long as possible! Congrats on such a nice example.

Mine has been on route its ENTIRE life.
See these photos to see what the wrong rubber does to it!

It’s unfortunate it was a bad earner for ops. Despite being on location for 25 years, the original, never-reset audits on mine indicates it’s only made a bit over $5k in 2 and a half decades. It basically did about 50¢ per day, lol.
