everything else seems to work fine but hitting a few jackpots (pretty sure this is what triggers it) seems to freeze up the DMD, game continues to play fine but the DMD stays locked on the multiball screen with whatever your score was at the time it froze.

Run the display test see if you have any abnormal results. If you do, might be a bad ROM or bad RAM on the display controller. Unless you have a ROM burner to verify the ROM, not much else you can do unless you swap boards or buy a new ROM.
