Quoted from bigjimm64:

First issue, the game locked up after draining the last ball in a game.

Most likely your power supply voltage is low, which causes the computer to freeze up.

Quoted from bigjimm64:

At this time, the game kept playing as normal but the music stopped (the speech continued) and the scoring display was all garbled up. Next thing I know, the playfield is filling with smoke.

This time when the computer locked up, it turn on the right sling shot. Most likely you have a incorrect fuse in the game which did not burn quick enough so the coil melted.

Quoted from bigjimm64:

point me in the right direction to figure this out.

You need a DMM, a soldering iron and some board repair experience.

Quoted from bigjimm64:

I will check my voltage and fuses tonight.

Before you can turn on the power again you need to remove the power from the bad coil, other wise it will keep on smoking. Just cut and tape one of the bad coil's wire.

Also post a pic of the power supply.

Quoted from bigjimm64:

Would one of these incorrect fuses have caused the coil to meltdown without blowing first?

Very possible. You need to figure out why the game locked up in the first place.

I'm guessing that the 5 volts is low, or you have a cracked solder joint. You need to measure the 5 volt test point.

Quoted from bigjimm64:

What is the correct way to test voltage,
MM on ac and test each pin of the J1 to ground?

Switch the DMM to DC volts setting, black lead to ground and use the red lead for testing the test points. I highlighted the test points for you on your pic.

Quoted from bigjimm64:

I have also attached a picture of the power supply.

It looks like someone has recapped the power supply. They didn't install C-9 correctly tho.

Let me know what you find.

Looks like it has the correct orientation to me.

Polarity is right, its just that they didn't use the radial holes. I can be a bit anal that way.

Quoted from PinballManiac40:

Is that what you were referring to?

Yep!

There is a five volt and ground test point on the cpu. Check the voltage here.

I would pull the cpu board out and look at the solder joints of 1J17. Reflow if they are questionable. Then lay board on a flat surface press down on all socketed chips. This will make sure that a chip hasn't come loose. Reinstall and test it again.
