Hi everyone!

I have an opportunity to buy a Strange Science machine which is in fairly good condition. I remember playing this at an arcade next to the Ritz Camera I worked at!

However, I was originally planning to buy a Kiss Pro. Which one do you think would be the better purchase and why? Strange Science has a lot of nostalgic value but obviously Kiss has the tech upgrades. Torn on what to do. Insights welcome.

I vote kiss.

If you want to save a ton of money and have other machines then go with strange science. If this will be your only pin then go with kiss. You will bore with Strange science in a month max if it's your only pin. Kinda impossible to compare the two. Miles apart in just about every way.

Congrats on weirdest comparison thread in a while!

KISS is a better game than Strange Science, which has the usual mid-80s oddball Bally ruleset and layout. It has it's charms for sure but it's not a great game. Kiss is a good game.

I havent played KISS but i had Strange Science and yeah it got old after a month or two. Cool topper though.
This is kind of like trying to decide between buying a 1980s Ford Escort and a 2016 Sports car. Or something like that. One will save you a lot of money because its old and has few features, the other is new with new techology and costs a lot. Like others said, you cant really even compare the two.

The anti-Stern guys are gonna eat this up, the title gave me a chuckle

Yeah, don't try to compare these two machines. It's like asking the question, "How much does a car cost?" The question does not contain enough information.

You have a lot more replay value and a warranty with a newer machine but that comes at a significant price. Both have advantages and disadvantages, but if you are buying retail, prepare to get raked over the coals with either purchase.

Uninformed buyers tend to keep pinball retailers in business. Generally speaking, any older machine you buy will break shortly after you buy it. It's not a guarantee, but very likely. Do you have a tech handy?

And for the love of everything sane, don't buy a game from someone and have it shipped to you. I hope you are buying a machine you can see in person.

It is easy, do you like apples or is tuesday the color blue?

This is the answer

Very hard to compare these 2 games... Strange Science was my first pin (still own it) so it will always have a special place in my heart. Comparing any Bally 6803 game to a modern Stern though is an apples to oranges comparison.

Nostalgia is nice and all, but after awhile...that nostalgia is going to fade unless the game is an absolute keeper. I wouldn't buy a pin strictly for nostalgia sake. Buy a pin that you feel will last in your collection (whatever the size). Nothing is worse than bringing a pin home and you get sick of it within a short amount of time. Will either one of those pins fall within that category? Some pins are better suited on route vs home use. How are you at repair if something goes wrong (especially the older of the 2 pins)? Honestly, if I had my choice it's a Kiss Pro all the way. In the end, it's your choice. You've got to figure out which pin (as different as they are) works best for you and your home environment. Good luck!

I would pick kiss, I had a strange science but it can't be your only game.

Great sound effects though, and great topper. Once you get that ss humming the sound is bad ass. I think I enjoyed the sfx most.

Strange Kiss, Pro Science

Quoted from Sinistarrett:

Good comparison, but its one flaw is you won't be embarrassed playing Strange Science.

if they are both the same price, you have to go with Kiss, because you should never be paying close to 4k for Strange science. That being said. I like the layout and uniqueness of Strange science. But I also like Kiss.

so if between

Very very nice Strange science for $1200

or a

HUO kiss pro for 3800. Go with strange science. Much harder to find than kiss. Kiss isn't going anywhere and easy to find.

If you can get a HUO Kiss for that price I'd say go for it, I haven't seen many going that cheap.

If $1200 is the price point on the strange science I'm interested in it.

I think it also comes down to what you enjoy more - working on pinball or playing pinball. I enjoy tinkering with things and trying new things - I polished up my soldering skills just to do a switch fix on my RFM. The strange science will probably take more of your time working on over a new Kiss that needs next to nothing.

I mean only buy the Kiss and give me the contact for the strange science.

I just sold mine fully working really nice playfield for $1000 like 6 months ago. Took awhile to sell it at that as well.

KISS, KISS, KISS!
Way more KISS die hards, resale will be a breeze.
Just enjoy the chase, it's a blessing to have options when purchasing a pinball machine.
The pin Gods are smiling on you.

If your memory is of playing Strange Science and you got into pinball because of that, go with that. If it is the only game you will have and ever intend to have, you'll probably tire of it and want to change it up, but having the nostalgia for a bit I think is worth it. Then you can decide more of what you really want in a new machine.

If it was just a fun machine from your youth, but the KISS machine is what you know you want one day, go for it.

#20 7 years ago

My first purchase was Strange Science so it will always be special to me for that but it did wear off quickly and I sold it to move on to get more replay value. If it's in a large collection to play hear and there it's fun but in a small collection it'll wear out.

If you plan on buying a Kiss, I strongly recommend you log some serious time on it first. Great layout and art package IMO, but the lack of code just killed it for me. There are very few games that have had their code abandoned like Kiss has.

I enjoyed it while I owned it, but in a line up of several games it just started to collect dust.
