Well, this is a sign to trade out of these crazy valuation names and get into some boring blue chips. Although you don't have to panic yet, with the stimulus and reopening/vaccine rally still in the mail..we'll get a nice chance to exit near the highs.

#10702 3 years ago

So, plenty of people are selling. Anybody here care to share what they are buying? Lots of people saying it's a rotation but even many "value" stocks have already been pushed up to crazy levels.

I'll buy back in to PSTH tomorrow.

Quoted from Roostking:

I need to understand the "backing up the truck" reference. I thought it meant cashing out, and backing up thr truck to collect profit. Is it meaning buying more of the stock.

Back up the truck is slang for purchasing a large position in a stock or other financial asset in hopes that its price will shoot up in the future. While it is rarely used now, the term was in vogue between 1999 and 2000. According to investopedia

Buying more at a cheap price.

Quoted from nwpinball:

It's pretty cool: https://finviz.com/map.ashx
It can be a useful chart for quickly visually seeing what sectors are doing well in the market at any given point. There are a couple different charts, including one for ETFs.

Great resource.

There's also a group scanner to show you how sectors are doing comparatively:

https://finviz.com/groups.ashx

And the stock scanner is really powerful. It allows you to sort by endless combinations of technical and fundamental stuff:

I sold off a ton of my high growth last week Feb 23-25. FVRR ROKU SE TDOC CRWD SQ MGNI etc. I blew it up and was over 60% cash at one point. I bought some dividend Etfs PEY RDIV SCHD now at 6% of porfolio now, added to my riets WPC NNN MAC now 6%, added to my oil/midstreams EMP MMP OIH now at 10%, bought commodities PDBC etf 2%, comeback Etf PBHB 2%, still have tech I have had for a while QQQ IGV Apple 15% and have some high growth left PLTR MELI ETSY TTD and am at a little over 50% cash now.

Honestly I thought the growth market was a mess - MEME stocks, short squeezing, you tube picks, spacs everywhere, a ton of newbie traders, high valuations, price to sales ratios, selling the news, high leverage trading........mess. I didn’t like it. No fun, so pretty much left the high growth side for a breather.

Don’t think growth is dead though and will buy some back when we’re in a confirmed uptrend and not try to catch a falling sword. Will keep a more level dumbbell of growth and value mix. I do think this year will end pretty well. Have to get through this first. But 2020 type gains are over. Miss them

Quoted from tacshose:As Buffet says don’t own for 10 minutes what you don’t want for 10 years.

this isnt your daddys stock market anymore. much faster. so, be nimble. sometimes it is better to "own for 10 minutes what you want to own for 10 minutes". dont always bet on black. there will be times to bet on red.

wesley is the last guy to be taking financial advice from.

Yeah, means to buy a lot/as much as you can.

The question for me is: When do you sell these best buys? At what point do you jump ship? Sell half, ride the other half?

you need a stop loss - mine is usually around -25%

for those following along, this trade went south and hit my stop loss this week and I sold it

Hey @pinnyheadhead, I would be very careful on the TTD. Google is changing how they track users for personalized ads, which TTD relies heavily on. If you are up, you might consider getting out.

Yeah. I see a lot of this. Mega tech says they may be entering a market, momentum small company takes a hit but the mega tech doesn’t rise at all in adding new lines of businesses - too large to grow?? Amzn pharmacy FB shops GOOG above, Apple car........

I just own 20% of what I had of TTD. In a taxable account so gotta pay on the way out. Most other stuff I sold was in IRAs so pay later. But paying taxes isnt a bad thing.

Fed sold 25 B of securities this week after making a huge purchase over the last 2 weeks. Historically Feb kinda sucks especially after election Santa Clause rally like last year, March is blah and April is good, May bad. We are in a roller coaster chop now and may be for a while.

I think you missed my point on this. Google is changing their business model on tracking, which is an existential threat to how TTD currently operates and monetizes things. Basically, the way TTD works is being shut off by Google. I am sure they will come up with new strategies, but this is causing tremendous pain for TTD now.

Well I'm really being punished for chasing PINS and PLTR. Hard to understand how companies that everyone loves, all the sudden turn to trash.

#10719 3 years ago

I think im waiting till next week to buy on some lows.
Watching Amazon for by in at 2800.
Buy Appl at 111.00, tesla looking for that under 500 buy in.

It will turn around. It's a dump off for those afraid of losing it all. Buyers and hedge funds will snap everything off after there is no more activity.

Pins not for me, to many competing in same market.
Pltr looking at a small toyota truck from 1980 back in at $20. Saving the big truck for bigger fish.

#10723 3 years ago

Started positions in OIH, KRE, ONDS, HACC, and added to PINS, NVTA positions this AM. Looking to sell on next bounce up to raise cash, HUBS for ~50% gain, BL for ~20% loss, DOCU for ~20% loss.

How do you decide what a company is worth vs its stock price? Neither of those companies make money. They most certainly will be around on ten years. $80 for pins might be cheap on 10 years. Same with pltr. Might have been a steal at $30. That's why you buy at ipo time and keep for ten years.

I'll buy a few shares of pltr at $20. Still long on MAC.

#10725 3 years ago

Guess I should have taken that shit ton of profit I had on PSTH when I could in the 30's.

Man

Anyone have the Ky Jelly? Getting bent over here lol

Bought more at $23.64 today

Floor at $20. Great risk reward

Lost all my profits by trying the buy and hold shit I normally don't do and just trade

Lesson learned. Good luck out there!

Well, of course I was hoping to catch some the hype and frankly nothing but good news for these 2. I do understand the market can fluctuate and I'm not going to sell at a loss or panic. I'm sure they will recover, i just hate seeing 1/4 of my investment in them gone, for now and on paper admittedly. Not rent money, so all good lol.

Selling any of the 22.5, 25 or 30 May strike puts in PSTH will get you pretty close to NAV if you get assigned.

PSTH is getting rocked by the CCIV fallout along with the entire market struggling right now. A good DA announcement can change that pretty quickly.

Exactly. Fundamentals of PSTH haven't changed, still a blank check waiting for the deal to finalize. Really, it was trading at too high of a premium pre-deal anyway. The plan was to never sell until then at least.

Buying more cheap shares from impatient weak hands today is good with me.

looks like 1/4th of my cash that I didn’t want to chase with is going to get assigned. 1/4th I did end up foolishly chasing.

Starting to feel out April/May for next 1/4.

Last 1/4th is in penalty box for me being naughty with first 1/4th.

I just bought more AAPL, GNOG, PLTR, AMD, and FSLY. This was a gift today. Plenty of capital left to go buy more when I need to. Set it and forget it.

Are you still high on GNOG....I'm getting hammered on it. About the only thing bringing my portfolio down.

Quoted from Roostking:

I'd say the professionals are pumping and dumping stocks. Look how after the recent drop of Tesla from $890 down to $740 some analysts and firms gave buy recommendations with targets over $1000/share. Now below $575.....

I have bought a couple hundred K of stocks the past week and will be buying more. This correction has been telegraphed for a while now and has been needed. Been saying for a while to have powder.

I made one bad trade: UWMC as an affinity play with RKT and COOP. Bought 1K shares at 12.25 and it is getting demolished. By the time I was moving in WSB did their shenanigans. Outside of GME, having WSB bring up a stock you invest in is a kiss of death. Bought 1.5K shares today to bring down my average.

I am watching the QQQ levels in relation to their 200 MDA. I think we are closer to a bottom than a top, but we still have some downward movement I think.

None of this is financial advice.

#10737 3 years ago

I'm relatively new to investing but looked into dabbling into my 401K, etc because of the Gamestop stuff. I have a robo advisor doing the stuff now but I sold GME at $124 yesterday right at the spike because I had set it to Stop-Loss. After a week I had enough of my 5 rollercoaster shares. It's now at close to $160 a share. In the end I lost $180 but could have made $620.

For me, the 401k is the boring, safe, and slow growth account. I don’t put any of it into a money market account, but I’m not going to attempt to actively trade it either.

My fun account is for fun.

Yeah I have UWMC too, but am in at $9, so while I've taken a hit, not as bad as you. Every time I see one of my stocks start getting pumped on WSB, I cringe. WSB and CNBC are the kiss of death now. I bought SNDL before WSB, and sold as soon as it hit the CNBC airwaves. I'd buy in again, but feel like anything that has a WSB history now is tainted for the foreseeable future.

Main reason I shifted most of my portfolio into Suncor was it's resilience on red days in the market, and I knew we would see what we are seeing now, though I am sure I am in the majority not minority that thought that a downturn was coming

Current plan is to wait for around 50% more from here before selling anything. I do think reopening plays is where it's at, you just need to choose what horses is best based on your own dd.

There was a lot of money made in TTD last year that you missed out on. However, with the new changes the thesis on TTD is fundamentally changed. Would not touch it at all right now.

Thinking of cashing out of EPD today - up a measly 3.5% where my other energy is PSX up 9.75% and XEC up 22.69%. Unfortunately URNM is down from 25% up to 11.66% May put the EPD money in another uranium play.

EPD is worth holding for the Dividend
Even if it's flat for the year, you get 7%+ yield

#10748 3 years ago

Yea 3.5% growth plus a 7% div is pretty sweet. I think I am up 7.5% with EPD.

PSTH rip from the lows

I think we saw the bottom today boys

Merger announcement is very close. Today was a gift.

Not the most sexy stock but Costco looks to be at an attractive entry point to me even with their earnings miss.
