maybe a unbiased group of people should make a video, like a mythbusters approach and test playfields from different eras and do a good video to explain once and for all the differences between the eras of playfields, the types of wood, the layers, types of clear and then perform a series of tests
    - Janka Hardness Tests
    - ball drop tests
    - automatic shot - loop, impact etc
and gather some true data along with before and after still images.

Yes timber is most probably softer now due to the demand across the globe and instead of hard ply layers throughout it is just on the exterior. For environmental reasons clearcoats are changing and going to a more flexible and forgiving clears

But there are still some quality issues as the clears shouldn't peel up at the shooter lane within a few hundred games so then that alone gets people concerned and question quality.

that link is very helpful PinMonk & TimeBandit and part of the puzzle and if put together with video and further tests it would show the differences between old and new playfield and between manufacturers.

just put a diamond plate finish on it and it will solve everything

    who wins diamond or steel

    Quoted from vid1900:

The only way to know is to test the moisture, and do a Janka hardness test under the apron.

in addition it would be interesting to machine just the clear off a small patch (1 x 1inch) under the apron to do a second janka test to determine a figure forjust the wood versus wood and clear janka test

    Quoted from rubberducks:

It's good in theory, but a lot of bamboo (ply) flooring warps badly. Probably due to shitty processing. But still, I'd be wary.

but if made in a plywood with the grain going in opposite directions would then make it alot more stable and strong

    #427 6 years ago

price dependent, but I might make my custom game (playfield) with bamboo plywood

    https://www.letobamboo.com/

and they have a supplier in my local area
