Quoted from javagrind888:

That's the only thing I'm worried about. Clear plastic tends to get really cloudy over time.

If the material is anything like what was used on later build ACDC premium / LE lower playfields it shouldn't have an issue. From what I'm reading the ACDC lower playfield used lexan as well.

Quoted from JodyG:

I am not a fan of playfield protectors, but I think I would cut a piece of .020" PET-G for the clear top playfield if I bought a premium. It would be somewhat easy to swap that piece out when it eventually gets dirty, as opposed to polishing or replacing the WPT-esque clear playfield.

Agree. Literally the ONLY time you will ever hear me endorsing playfield-protecting overlays. Makes total sense for this particular problem.

Quoted from Bublehead:

I have owned a Stern SAM FGY for 10 years. Minimal maintenance with a fair amount of play. No experience with SPIKE, but there is a lot of node board anxiety floating around here to make me only a cautious believer in the board set. But you got to buy one to know, so this may be me jumping into the new Stern pool with a life preserver that has a hole in it.

I think you are making a bit of a mountain out of a molehill. The original problem is not anywhere near as widespread is Pinside would make you think, and Stern has started to release schematics for their prior node boards.

Same, you might be on to something

Quoted from DS_Nadine:

I thought about this and I think, while not be the thing we want them to do, it is the respectful thing to do for all vendors that bring lots of existing machines for play and sale. Like the shitload of Munsters Premiums Marco brought.
Since Stern relies heavily on them promoting their machines for them it's not the best thing to lock away mones/ sales by presenting a new machine right at the beginning of a show.
So while Stern still is revealing games at tech- or amusement shows (where there is no pinball retailer), they'd propably never ever again reveal a major game at a pinball show.

I switched from Munsters Premium to BK LE yesterday with Marco. They were telling me the BK LE is basically sold out and maybe I could get One. They called back 50min later and said I did get my name on One. Deposit paid. YEAH!

Hasn´t steve himself said, that the clear lexan playfield could be easily replaced? i think that piece of plastic will be a no brainer to reproduce.

Ok, then maybe I should have said it this way-

Despite the negative things people have posted on the SPIKE system and node board issues here on Pinside, BKSR is a title that would make me ignore all that and purchase a NIB Stern.

Or how else do you want me to express a cautious change in my opinion of SPIKE? Sorry I didnt drink the koolaid as fast as Jim Jones would have liked me to, but I did say I want to drink it.

You have to give people a little credit for reading, understanding, and researching a potential $9000 purchase, and expressing a reluctance to move to the SPIKE boardset after owning a SAM system is not heresy, but cautious optimism.

Why turn over this rock looking for a fight, when I already said Stern won?

Someone needs to sell a 2-piece mylar for the whole thing. That sucker's going to scratch up. Inevitable.

I look at the Premium and LE, then I look at BK2K, then I look at my miniscule-budget single-level whitewood design and go 'oh come on, even I managed a physical kickback in the left outlane'.

Quoted from TheFamilyArcade:

So High Roller Casino and Striker Extreme were licensed? Let’s not hyperbolize here. And the third installment of a game isn’t exactly an original theme. Just sayin’.

Striker Extreme was also themed into NFL.

NASCAR became grand prix for markets where NASCAR is not an thing

Man I am torn up on this one-I want to love it so much. The art is just amazing and it looks spectacular, but the Pro looks like it will play slow with stop and go flow(with orbits, etc.) and the Premium/LE could be hit or miss with the upper PF. The magna save button not being on the side cabinet may be difficult to engage in time. When I play my Rolling Stones LE I barely have enough time to initiate ball save out lane feature pop ups to save ball from draining with buttons located next to each other. Having a difficult time trying to imagine having to take your hands off flippers completely to engage-not sure about timing? I already know that this game will probably grow on me after getting to play it. I did not care for Star Wars upon release and all I did was bash it-then I learned rules and played it-now it is one of my favorites. I really can't wait to play this game in person, it has the majority of elements I am looking for including fantastic art, kick ass music, and hopefully a great layout and code integration.

#1013 5 years ago

Whew! It took me 2 days to get through 21 pages of comments.

The game looks great. Im super excited to see it. Major props to Stern for such a complete and fully detailed release. High res photos of all Models, video, music, interviews. Great release. As much as I would enjoy one now, I will wait and play it before I consider buying.
I know, it sounds crazy right?

The main toy looks great. Love the music (so far) and the art. The part you can’t know u til playing it is how it shoots. Mose specifically, how it shoots for you personally. It means a lot to me, probably more than most. I’ll be happy to wait.

Not crazy just smart

I got a chuckle when some guys were like 'I am purchasing an LE!" after seeing cloudy grainy photos of the Black Knight release. I can get the excitement(been there done that) but nowadays I have made a pledge to play the game first before purchasing. I have no concern of not being able to get an LE at a later date if I wanted one. I personally am happy I have learned to control impulse buys and now I am really picky with my choices.

Long shot - but anyone else ever play Ultima Underworld on DOS/PC? First ever game in 3D, and you had to eat/drink to survive. This theme is right up my alley.
Got in on an LE

Ultima Underworld is my favorite all time game. Never beat it... need to go back and play it on GoG.

No worries... I wasn't trying to slam you, but I just wanted to make sure that people aren't thinking the node boards are so fragile that they are made of glass or something.

I have had some major issues with Spike node boards, but fortunately Stern has taken care of everything. I did have a concern of Stern potentially going out of business in the years to come and potentially being SOL. My thoughts are while the Spike boards are proprietary in design-if Stern did ever go out of business that some other company would definitely step up to provide aftermarket boards. There are millions of dollars out there in Stern Spike games and I feel certain companies would make sure to keep them going as long as possible. I have faith in future support of Spike.

Ok, anyone else think this? Stern... why even try on Pro models? Why not create a standard PRO playfield with a fan layout, 2 ramps with vacuformed returns, One bash target/toy/magnet, a set of 4 standups, a 3 bank of drop targets, one scoop, one spinner, 3 jets, and a 3 lane rollover. Now every PRO really IS the same, you don’t change the rules, you just change the artwork, callouts, and sounds/music. So the price is the same, the features never change, but the casual player wont care, he’s getting too ducking frunk trying to get the bar maid to give him her number. Does anyone else think Pro models are the Gottlieb wedgeheads of the new millennia?

Wait, this is what they really do... isn’t it? my bad.

No, no, No, No, no, no and No. I think.

I think they do a good job of giving people options. Some people are drawn to toys and complicated layouts, so you have the Premium/LE. Some of the pro games actually shoot much better than their Premium counterparts (GOT, GB)...so flow fanatics are actually better off with the cheaper games. Stern obviously has their shit together and is firing on all 8 cylinders...their business model is literally printing them money right now. I am finding it really hard to bitch right now, when you see what has been happening over at Stern the last 12-24 months. We are not that far removed from the era of World Poker Tour and 24.

Looking closely at the detail they put into the knight has me thinking it could be the 'best' toy in all of pinball. The glowing eyes & face shield, the interaction with shield and flail, I keep thinking how bad ass it will be to hit the Knight with a shaker motor during a hurry-up.

Why didn't I think of that?

#1025 5 years ago
Quoted from JodyG:

No, no, No, No, no, no and No. I think.

Well, my only problem with Pro machines is they lend themselve to be “the common denominator” of pinball. They take out the costly features, but that only leaves the exact BOM on the table for every PRO. They try and do as much as possible with that BOM, but I have to admit, when paying and playing, I look for Premium titles, and “settle” for a Pro if that is all you got to offer me at your pin playing establishment.

There are instances of a Pro being better than a Premium, and the difference is usually flow related, GOT is like that for me. So Stern is trying to offer choices and that is great, but they need to realize that between title to title, the PRO machines need more diversity in the underlying mechanics.

I don’t want the phrase “Damn, it’s just another Stern Pro...” to become part of my pin playing lexicon like “Damn, its just another Gottlieb wedgehead...” entered mine back in the early seventies when we were getting hooked on Bally and WMS titles, and left the wedgeheads to the “old timers” to play. Apologies to wedgeheads and old timers, of which now I am a fan and a memeber, respectively.

Quoted from PinMonk:

Holy crap was that phone connection bad. The podcast should have been edited to take out the copious dead air and static/digital sounds. Could have shaved literally 15% or about 3 minutes off the running time and made it less annoying to listen to.
One nugget that was interesting. The top "playfield" we know is plastic, but in the podcast he says it's essentially like the plastic on the top level of WPT - not even that thick. Anyone with a WPT knows how crappy that plastic looks after not a lot of play. Counting on it to stay clear enough to provide some visibility to the area below that solid wood will not is a foolish wish as all other pins that use plastic playfield pieces have shown. Disappointing they didn't use wood.

In another interview it was mentioned that the piece is easily cleanable/polishable and replaceable w/o removing the flipper etc. Not ideal obviously, but something at least.

I agree the Knight toy looks great - the topper sounds cool too:

Quote from Steve Ritchie:

On the Topper:

“The topper has Black Knight’s head, probably six inches high by 3 inches wide. A big ostrich feather sticking out of the top of it. It is totally robotic, it can look left and look right. It also has modulating LEDs in the mask, where all the holes are…so he can express anything he wants…when it says “No way”, it is going to shake his head left and right. And he is going to rock his head back and [laugh]…I think it is the best topper ever.”

Mod opportunities already.

This might be the 1st game that I would consider animated side panels. I thought that they are typically too expensive but if they could incorporate the burning castle theme on the sides that matched the backboard that could be great.

#1035 5 years ago

I'm thinking we may see some colored upper playfield plastic options once the modders get a hold of this. It might actually look pretty cool with the right color transparent plastic for the upper pf...

You own a Monster Bash (which is a GREAT game) that is the standard fan layout. You own Family guy which just shoot the right side all day. Have you PLAYED these pros or just looked at pics? Metallica and Maiden are 2 completely different games with amazing pro models. Ghostbusters seems to play better as a pro. Deadpool looks nothing like the other pro models. Stern pumps out 3+ games per year now. CGC remade 3 of my favorite games but I would only want to own one for the cost since they all have similar layouts. Didnt you promise to keep your thoughts in the thread you made. Lies! Lol

#1039 5 years ago

Could this open the door for other original legacy themes, to be further continued?

Make them spicy and interesting enough for the newbs, but include a little nostalgia as an inside joke/acknowledgement for the veterans?

Elvira 3 is already a widely spread rumor.

High Speed 3?

Pin*Bot/BOP/J*B continued further (not including BOP2.0 in this)

I wonder if the IP rights legal maneuvering could work for Pat and Jack over at JJP; "Return to the Funhouse"?

On second thought, maybe this is dumb.

What I do miss though, is the self referential tidbits that used to be popular in machines. Picking up Pin*Bot in Taxi. The time machine mode in Junk Yard. Having the characters from Creech being jailed in JD. Those were great little easter eggs. If anything, maybe now designers can return to paying the little homages like they used to.

If anything, I think the (hopeful) success of BK3 will change the path of current trends in the industry. I'd say we're in the start, if not the middle of, the second/third/fourth "golden era" of pinball boys and girls. Hopefully it goes on at a sustainable pace so there isn't a crash like the last time.

Life is good!

The spinning mech in the Knight's hand appears to be 2 connected spinning balls that will be smacking the game balls with force quite regularly. I suspect that owners of this game will need to check their pinballs for damage more frequently than other games as a result. Heck they will need to check the balls on the mech too to make sure they are not chipped which would cause faster wear on the game balls. I am still almost certainly going to be buying a Premium but it is something to keep in mind.

amazing pro models

Mine was not a character assasination of all Pros, but my observation that back in the day, if you wanted more of the same, you played a Gottlieb wedgehead, and if you wanted something really new and different, you played Bally or Williams. This was just how we experienced paying and playing back then.

Fast forward to today, if I want more of the same, I play a Pro, I want something new and cutting edge, I play a Premium/LE. It is just a feeling I get from Stern today, and how I choose a title to play on site.

People tend to think “settling” to play a pro is a negative way of thinking, and that we should be glad we have any pinball at all, and I agree with that, I am glad we are getting new pins to play, and Pros don’t suck, but because they are the least expensive, they tend to be “the common denominator” of pinball is all I am saying.

#1046 5 years ago

I'm rather indifferent on the theme.

Not one to stroke every SR game either.

Hope the game is good. Wife agreed to 1 new game per year. I skipped 2018. Does that mean I can buy 2 in 2019?

Only one way to find out

#1047 5 years ago

Looks pretty cool. Hopefully that translates into great game play.

The other Black knights were average.

Not singling anyone out, as I've seen several folks say the same - HOWEVER - I have to believe that those saying this are not taking into account WHEN the first Black Knight was released. 1980. At that time, it was the VERY FIRST machine to have multiple playfield levels, timed drop targets, magna save. When this game came out it was one of the most amazing pinball machines ever made. Sure, stacked up against todays games it may be 'average' ...but not back in the 80's.
