On occasion, my Trek will state that the ball has drained when it is still in play. This can lead to either losing the ball or another ball being launched, depending on the save.
So... it's an opto issue I assume. Any tips on how to approach this?

Unless there is a deeper underlying issue. This is a common issue on ST. Check the plugs and reseat them on the trough boards.
And the small connectors on the boards under the playfield. Ramp optos (clear wires)
Seems them wiggle loose over time. When i had my ST i hot glued them. Tiny dab.
The issue never popped up again in the 3 years i owned it. Shaker installed.
Quoted from Eskaybee:Yes, reseat the connectors to the ball trough under the pf where the balls shoot into the shooter lane. It happened to my ST about 2-3 times in the 2+ years I owned it.
Reseat. If it comes back. Reflow the solder on the optos and pins the connector plugs onto. On the two small ball trough opto boards.
LTG : )
Also make sure the balls are not magnetized. Common if you have replaced the stock balls with super shiny ones.
also, if a wire in one of the trough switches matrix is disconnected somewhere, the game will also do this.
