I'm getting an AC/DC premium in a couple weeks and wanted to get a tournament button from Pinball Life. He does not sell a harness. Are the current games already wired for the button inside or do I need a harness? I wanted to have a pay tournament amongst friends every now and then. Thanks,
Robert

Its wired but, The light wires have spades and the button wires need a diode on them followed by soldering them on.

So, I'll need to add a diode in line of one of the light wires? I don't like soldering to microswitches. I have tons of quick disconnects on hand. Maybe I'm not understanding totally.

I found this online:

I understand what you were saying now. Thanks.

So, I went to hook up my button. The switch and tabs on in are tiny. Not like pictured in the above link. Anyone know what wire goes exactly where on the new style button/switch? Apparently, Stern has changed the assembly since the document came out. The QD's in the cab won't fit it. Don't really wanna solder each lead, but I can. May pick up some .100 QD's to change over to. Thanks for any help.

Hey

For it to work at least on the LE's you need to put an LED bulb in.

Green goes to center of switch. Diode wiring is in the instructions. The wire with the black shrink wrap will need to be soldered to the other side of the switch.

You should then be left with 2 wires. I do not think it matters how they are hooked to the light socket. Though you can test it. I have found the new buttons do not work on LEs without the LED bulb.

The new switch has a teeny incandescent bulb. I'll see what I can come up with. I was hoping someone might have hooked one of these new mini switches up already and could get a pic or two.

I have the same problem. I'm trying to fit a tournament button to my WoF. The button looks the same as the one fitted to my Shrek from the front, but the connections are completely different at the rear with smaller terminals. Photos attached of the one attached to my Shrek and the new button that I want to fit to my WoF.

Is this a different type of tournament button that is fitted to later machines? Am I OK to use this button by attaching the wires to the terminals?

Should be fine. We just need to know which terminals are which on he new set up. I imagine the 2 together are for the light.

Use a battery and see which two light the light. If you can't tell the three lugs for the micro mini switch.

I hooked them up on AC/Dc and Transformers LE. Easy to do once you figure out it needs a LED bulb to light. The LE's do not have the voltage to light a standard bulb.

I can tell that the cluster of 3 are for the switch and the 2 together are for the light, but I need to know which wire color goes where and where to put the diode and what direction. Thanks for chiming in, Lloyd.

#13 7 years ago

Not sure on the switch, but can help with the diode. The two wires going to the led will be hot, or supply voltage, and ground. The band on the diode goes towards the hot side.

Thanks for the info. I will be installing a Tournament Button on my TRON. I don't get why they just don't install the $5.00 button...

I wish they changed the cab wiring to match the new style switch they are selling to parts dealers. As it is, I have to cut the QD's off and solder this. I'm not ordering 100 QD's of the correct size for 8 or 9 dollars. Gonna give this a go tonight using the info, so far.

Look at the other switches in your game to learn their coloring scheme, and what base color wire gets the black end of the diode.

Got this thing wired up and working, but the light won't light. It is a #86 bulb and I have no way to test the bulb. I did take the light wires from the tourney button and swap them to the start button and it flashes. I took the light wires from the start button and hooked them to the tourney light tabs and nothing. I assume a dead bulb and Terry is sending me a replacement. I've never had a game with #86's, so I don't have spares on hand or I wouldn't even bother him.

Oh, and I ended up using the standard wiring on the smaller tabs and they seemed to hold fine. Not loose. Thanks, all.

Did you try it in lamp test, or have a tournament running and credits on the game ?

LTG

#19 7 years ago

Terry sent me a replacement #86 and no change. I have a tournament set up to run 30 days. I have my game on free play and set the tournament for a $0.00 prize pool. Light won't work in test or attract mode. Button works fine. I hook the lamp leads up to the start button and it flashes. Start button has a 555 style LED inside. I took that out and placed a standard 555 in there and it won't light. I hook the start button lamp leads to the #86 socket and it won't light that way either. I'm stumped. I hooked a spare socket to the lamp leads with a #47 in there and it won't light that either. It can't be looking for only LED's can it?

Have you checked continuity of wiring from board in head to light bulb socket ?

LTG

#21 7 years ago

I have not gone all the way back to the board, no. I have verified continuity to a certain point, but not back to the back box. Guess I'll grab the manual and do so later.

#22 7 years ago

Cripes! I already have a headache thinking about this. There is a place to harness in a tourney button, yet they don't sell the harness prewired to a button anymore? Instead you have to buy a button, buy and solder on a diode, buy an LED bulb and solder all the unlabled wire yourself?!?

Someone needs to start pre-wireing these buttons for some spare scratch. I'll be your first customer...name your price.

OK. The 2 wires that are there for the tourney light are yellow with red tracer and red with yellow tracer. Red with yellow tracer goes all the way back to the back box. I'm assuming this is the ground. I followed the yellow with red tracer all the way to the end. It stops at a .100 IDC connector that plugs into the 3 LED board under the T.N.T. inserts. It tones out, so it has continuity all the way there, but that is where it stops. There are 2 other small connectors that leave that board and go to other LED boards. Also, there are 2 other yellow wires with red tracers in the back box. One on the aux driver board and it does not tone to my lamp wire, the other is to a non connected 6 pin molex and also does not tone. Guess I'm giving Pat a call again tomorrow. Ugh. I just want my tourney button to blink.

Keep us posted.

I see Cointaker and BC's both carry #86 LED bulbs. I would try one of those since you mentioned the 555 LED in the start button worked with the wires you tried.

If that is the only issue, it seems that Stern would either put the word out to vendors that are selling the buttons to pass along that info to people that are buying them, or better yet include an LED in the button (AND the harness while they are at it).

I hope it works out for you....as I am planning on putting a button in my X-Men LE when the time arrives. Better a button than a useless square hole in the cabinet.

Update. Chaz confirms I need to use a LED style 86 bulb. The LE's and Premiums are not set up to output the voltage for incandescents. Ordering some LEDs stat. So, for future LE purchasers, get a LED 86 when you order your tourney button.

Glad you got things figured out. The bad part is I dount any of the people that stock LED #86 bulbs sell tourney buttons and people that sell tourney buttons don't sell #86 LED bulbs. Double shipping...yeah!!!

Wow. Just ran into this problem myself. A real head scratcher until I saw your post. Thanks for the heads up!

As a follow up, my last tournament button I got from Terry at PBL had a LED 86 preinstalled in it. They must be coming that way from the factory now.

Nope, I got a C555 incandescent bulb in my Tournament button, I bought the #86 LED from CT, but now it appears I need 555 wedge style. MeT premium is ran on only LED so the original bulb would not work.

I have purchased all my tourney buttons from Terry at PBL. Perhaps you bought from someone who still had old stock of tourney buttons with full size 555's.

No, I got my order from Terrry at pinballife.com on Friday as well as an #86 LED, cuz I read this thread and thought well better get the LED. Opened up the tournament button to swap light bulbs and a C555 incandescent came out, and I'am holding a small dinky #86 LED and know this bulb wont work. As long as the button works is all I'am concerned with. I'll just grab a warm white 555 wedge LED to put in there. This is going in a MET Premium.

Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but I'm also having trouble with the tournament button install on my iron man VE. In switch test mode the button registers, but in game mode nothing. The light also does not work, it came with an incandescent 555, but I also tried a 555 led, nothing. I've enabled tournament mode in the adjustments mode. What am I missing?

Thx

You need to go to the tournament menu and start a tournament.

A quick update, on the new Spike system Sterns no diode is needed on the tournament button. Of course I didn't realize this until after I'd soldered the diode in...

Sorry to bring this thread up again, but can you use the following tournament button with the Spike system?

Thanks for the clear instructions. Got my ST Pro set up with a tournament button now so we can switch back and forth between 3 and 5 ball games without having to open her up to change the settings.

Just saw this thread, so sorry I am a little late.
I also put a Pinball Life Tournament start button on my AC/DC Premium.
I just figured the hole was already there and the wiring was already installed.
I put a bright white flat LED in mine and it does what it is supposed to do.
