Maybe Jack is there because Stern is going to release their LE topper at the show??

Quoted from BoJo:

Is that a joke?

Yeah, it almost looks like a real promo pic. It certainly has a Gary Stern early Data-East promotional advertising vibe! Brian Eddy looks a bit off in the picture, but I can't tell if its from a photoshop/deepfake job, or if it's just from the goofy sheriff's uniform and hat.

Unfortunately, can't even see anything on the projected screen.

Looks like there should be a cnet livestream @ 2pm: https://www.cnet.com/news/ces-2020-day-1-live-giant-samsung-tvs-foldable-laptops-cat-robots-and-more/

Yeah shocker, considering the photographer is clearly using a flash or a spotlight.

Quoted from kpg:

Maybe the same fix can be done for those that fixed the Ghostbuster's Scoleri brothers drop targets, using these springs...
https://www.pinballlife.com/ghostbusters-scoleri-brothers-drop-target-spring-fix-kit.html

No - different problems entirely. The ghostbuster issue was the drops bricking and not being responsive enough. The stranger things ones are fine in that regard. The issue is simply the ball hop you get from hitting drop targets dead on or the ball getting thrown by their reset.

#4108 6 months ago
Quoted from vireland:

The standups can likely be 90% fixed with the swinks target bracket that angles the target down a few degrees. Almost completely solved the massive problem on Ghostbusters with the 2x/3x standups.

Its not like the ball flies across the pf like it did on ghostbusters. It is not that visible a problem playing the game... but clearly the ball gets some action based on the resulting pf.

That photo is awesome. I legitimately thought the reflection of that person's face on the dmd display was actually the game. That is how washed out the DMD is...

#4111 6 months ago

Wow, I thought the same until you pointed it out!

Just watched the CNET stream. Even with the lights down as low as they could, the playfield projection was still really washed out.

I wonder if a mod will be possible where one could use a pico projector with much more lumen output. prob Stern went with a low end unit.

Cheap Pico's are like 150 lumens. In the $350+ category, you are 600 lumens or more. https://www.bestbuy.com/site/aaxa-p7-pico-full-hd-dlp-projector-gray-black/6333932.p?skuId=6333932

One has to assume the Pico projector in ST Prem is sub $200 BOM cost. So prob it's possible to triple the brightness.

#4114 6 months ago

I'm watching CNET's live stream coverage of it now. I missed the segment, but you can go back in time. As of right now, 5:46pm ET, the Stern segment starts at approximate -39:00.

Crap that looks bad. So looks like it just doesn’t translate well on video hence the delay. Have to be seen in person at distributors or show.

I don't know why Stern doesn't adopt the revised standup profile because it's so effective at keeping the ball on the playfield, though. Makes no sense. Simple manufacturing change and then fixes most of the problem across all their pins.

Poor choice on Stern's part to show it off here for the first time. Really excited to see one in person though.

Eddy seems very confident on the stream last night that it was going to look great in homes/bars.

That was a pretty dark stage. Really going to need to be as dark as you would watch a home theatre projector (and not a very good quality one).

Clearly why we haven’t seen a stream. On a stream they’ll need to decide whether to show the screen images (ie dark) or show the ball/game action (ie light). Unless there’s HDR for video?

Maybe they should have gone the Viper route and had ceramic glo pinballs and blacklight so you get dark and can see the ball as well. Probably too many eye damage liability issues if it's constantly on, though...

Guys, this projector idea looks like a flop. I wanted to wait to say it, but really, there are literally no pictures indicating the effect is going to work the way we all expect it to. It just looks bad. I am going to say it, but this is the first time I truly think the Pro is the way to go over a Prem & LE. I know there will be people who disagree, but at the end of the day, its a gigantic white screen and white ramps on the playfield and it doesn't seem the projector is strong enough to overcome that.

So far that projector looks as impressive as the Predator UV "glow-in-the-dark" playfield ink. Great idea, I hope they can execute it well. Good Luck Stern!

If you make it this dark, isn't it hard to play pinball?

The issue is the lumens output of the projectors.

I am a videophile and have done numerous projector/home theater builds in the past. Projector lumens output and the screen material that it is projected on needs to be ideal for the environment in which it will be presented.

Clearly the issue here is the projectors Stern has used are inadequate as far as lumens output goes. Its quite simple, they do not output enough light and the white screen material they use is likely not a high gain material (1.4-1.5 or so) needed to properly display the projected images.

It all comes down to the fact Stern didn't want to pony up the money for a better projector set up and they likely already bought a ton of these projector units in bulk from China somewhere and they won't be swapping them out.

Bummer all around because it's a cool idea, just poor execution.

The only possible saving grace is if the cheap, crappy, bottom-of-the-barrel, likely $50 pico projector can be replaced by something in the $200-$300 range to improve contrast and lighting. That might make the mapping visible at the minimum level you would expect. A lot will depend on the space available for the mount in the apron, too. Looks like it's very close to the ball drain.

my reasoning is that i own projectors and they look like absolute ass in well lit areas, my basement arcade is not well lit, its lit like an arcade and will make projector technology actually work, as opposed to a convention floor with overhead lighting. it was poor choice to show this game off in such a setting without a tent, but it is what it is.

i just dont trust photographs of a projector, because i know how they work. the presentation is shit, im not disputing that, but in an arcade, that is lit like an arcade, itll be fine.

Well, if you use a projector with enough lumens and a high gain screen of 1.4 or higher, then they can look really damn good in well lit areas which was my point.

The problem here is it looks like "ass" because the projectors are "ass" lol

This is a good example of a proper lumens output + proper projection surface + well lit area.. notice you cant see any of the white screen behind the images?

The advantage on the pinball machine is we are talking about a throw distance of like 2' max? So if you dump the shitty 100 lumen projector in the machine and install a $300 600 lumen one, it will be night and day better.

No doubt the early owners will have a look at this.

#4136 6 months ago

And here is an example of a crappy low lumens projector.

It's really simple, the projector installed in the machines are low light output cheapo projectors.. it's really not rocket science at all.

Yeah, but why should anyone need to put a $300 projector upgrade in their $7900-$9K pinball machine that is already thousands of dollars more expensive then the Pro/Non Projector machine? That sucks. There's no excuse for this, if they were going live with this new feature they should have implemented it with the right hardware.

Not to mention the screens are surrounded by LED lights all over the playfield which further reduces the projected image quality. No doubt they knew this machine really could have used better projectors and they went the cost cutting route over quality and its obvious.

Kaneda has recommended on his podcast that it would be common sense to have some sort of assembly to block the light, so the screen would be easier to see. I wonder if Stern was listening to him and taking his advice?

i wasn't fair in giving you the benefit of the doubt in your argument, sorry. it is true that with a good enough projector you can overcome such obstacles, I get that. my point is I never really thought stern would put a good enough projector to overcome being in a room such as yours, especially in the physical confines of a pinball machine apron. i think in a home environment which is the fair place to assume premiums will be they will shine, pun intended.

your point is perfectly valid and accurate, i just think people stating its total garbage based on some photos at a convention is unfair.

Exactly, but the main problem will be the space available to mount it. It looks to be right above and to the side of where the ball drains. There's not a lot of clearance at all. It will be the main problem in fixing this to make it acceptable to most people that don't want to watch blurry, washed out video mapping.

Let's be honest. It's still in the neighborhood of garbage in the very dark room promo video with the glass off - the most ideal conditions. It's still blurry, washed out, indistinct under those ideal conditions. The crap pico projector Stern bottom-of-the-barreled in there will have to be replaced for this video mapping to have a chance at whatever coolness Brian Eddy clearly aspired to.

I almost want to buy a Premium just so I can fix it and publish some recommended replacements I've got working in it to get this machine to the level Brian Eddy deserves. Almost.

It looks like Stern may have brought a Stranger Things Premium over to the Cnet booth. Also, Cnet's cameraman may have lowered the exposure on the camera to better capture the projected images as the recorded area does look dimmer than in Stern's booth. Either way it's very difficult to see.
